55Chev 4x4 project

Hello all,I just joined the site and am hoping to get some advice on my project. I have just bought a clean 79 SWB chev PU 4x4 frame with complete power train. I want to put a 55-56Chev 1/2 ton body on it. Just wondering if anyone here has done this and what to look out for. Its my first 4x4 and I am looking forward to it Just want to plow the driveway and maybe a little off roading. Any help is appreciated-Thanks

you might go over to the AD/TF area and as this question. if i remember right there are a few guys over there with 4x4 swaps. they might be able to help you that extra bit

Might want to compare the wheelbase of the 79 vs the 55. If they are significantly different then you might need to make modifications. Other than that you probably just need to make custom brackets to mount the body on the chassis. I believe the 55 is a straight frame while the 79 is a drop frame and may also be wider.

Do you happen to have frame with the body of the 55 chevy you wanting to use. i would personally if the frame is in good shape use the original frame and just swap everything over then you can set your own wheel base to where it needs to be and just have change the length of the driveshafts. that is what i did with my 49 chevy and it worked out great. you could easily do the swap in a weekend or 2 tops depending on your fab skills and tools to work with

My build thread show how I put 74 running gear on a 59 frame and springs (link in signature). 59 frame is same as 55 except 3" longer at front for longer fenders. If you want to use the 79 frame issues may be at the step area and bed kickup. Since you are going 4wd it is not as bad a 2wd where they are ususally trying to lower as well. Go to the 47-59 area, there are some guys that have used the newer frames. Another factor is that the cab/hood/door/fender alignment can be problematic when going to a non-stock frame. I choose to use the stock frame and springs to eliminate that variable. Good luck.

I have the frame home now and did some measurements. Mounting holes are very close and the wheel base is 2in longer.It will need a 5-7in body lift because of the kickups but that's ok-its a 4x4. Now I need to find a good cab and front clip.

Body lifts are never okay.

Yeah a 5 inch body lift just sounds like trouble to me in the long run.
