Intro P10 kurbmaster reefer gears
Hi I've been lurking for a while and finally trading my Chev express for this 73 Kurbmaster JR/p10 (pictures below). Being doing some work to get it road worthy again and found out the control arms are actually from 72...Dash looks pre 73 as well, so I'm posting here.
The rear gears are 4.11 and can't quite get up to highway (80km/hr) with a 292 and th350. I've searched and searched and thought the 3.08 might be better, but am wondering with it loaded with my tools it might be too sluggish taking off. I mostly drive city, but highway is normally 110-120km/hr 68-75 mph...Am i making a mistake with the 3.08 gear? Any one else put them in their p10? Thanks! |

just with the design of the truck , i would not go with 3.08 unless you had a standard transmission, there are other gear ratios available, 3.42, 3.73 and i think you can find a 3.55,
if you went with a 3.08 i think you would need to get a high stall converter just to keep some low end power

Re: Intro P10 kurbmaster reefer gears
Thanks, with the 3.42 I'll be running around 2800rpm to go 70 mph, is that a reasonable rpm for this engine? At least I won't have worry about speeding tickets on the highway anymore.

Not sure I would be too concerned about going 70 in that thing. It is literally a box on wheels. 3.73's would be fine, I would think. You only want to do it once.

Re: Intro P10 kurbmaster reefer gears
I agree with Dan.
I think the 292 has quite a bit of low end torque so that will make a difference, but I think the jump from 4.10 to 3.07 would be too much of a change. I think the 3.42's are hard to find unless you buy a new ring and pinion set. I would try the 3.73 first, they are usually pretty easy to find. I'm presuming the P-10 has leaf springs so you would have to make sure whatever you get matches your spring configuration. Oh, and to the board. LockDoc

WELCOME!!!! I agree that the 3:73 is probably a better choice. It also is a great choice if you decide that a 700R4 is the way to go for a tranny. That would be the best of both worlds giving you good low end torque and allowing you an overdrive for hiway speeds/lower rpms.

Re: Intro P10 kurbmaster reefer gears
If budget allows an overdrive trans might be a better alternative. That way you still have the 4:11 gears to get that thing moving and an rpm drop for highway cruising. Those old 6's will pull a dump truck or school bus. It will handle what you can put in it.

Re: Intro P10 kurbmaster reefer gears
Thanks for all the info, I'm getting that it's ok to be running 3000+ rpm highway then with the 3.73? They'll likely be new gears so I don't want to keep changing them out to see. I'll have to check the pricing on a 700r4.
