Need New Flexplate. Pull Motor Out?
I need to swap my flexplate in my 350sb/TH350 combo. I am considering pulling the entire motor and tranny and going through them. Not rebuild, but clean them up real good and repaint the block, new motormounts, new valve cover gaskets, tranny pan gasket, seal up the leaks. Has anyone pulled the motor and tranny out of one of these out as One Unit? I have pulled them before out of Fords still bolted together. Where should I get the flexplate from? I know there are many ones to consider depending on hp and such. Thanks!

Re: Need New Flexplate. Pull Motor Out?
If I was doing all that I would just remove the front clip, only
take you about an hour tops, dozen bolts, two rad hoses and unplug some wires and everything is wide open and easy to access. Just my thoughts. Flexplate can be purchased at any auto parts supplier and can be replaced by just sliding trans back |

Re: Need New Flexplate. Pull Motor Out?
lol.....Cool. I like the idea, now you can change out as many parts as possible on the motor while its out or when it does get out. Clean & maybe paint engine compartment ect.......Looks like fun.

Re: Need New Flexplate. Pull Motor Out?
I prefer to pull the motor and tranny as a unit instead of just pulling the motor and propping up the tranny. Just use a bucket to catch the trans fluid that will leak out the drive shaft spline on the trans when lifting and tilting. Should be really easy with the front clip apart but not necessary. Enjoy

Re: Need New Flexplate. Pull Motor Out?
Thanks for the help guys. I guess I will be pulling this thing myself because I have no friends. Lol. As for my check list it serves me well as a reminder because I can't remember anything. I've even got a reminder in on the left-hand side of the hood to love on my wife so she doesn't feel neglected for all the attention that I'm giving to "damn truck". I think that's going to be the name of my truck as it was affectionately named by my wife.

Re: Need New Flexplate. Pull Motor Out?
Yeah, I'm sure I will be doing more than just the flexplate. So far I have planned:
Flexplate clean up engine bay valve cover gaskets cap/rotor plugs/wires Tranny pan gasket Tail shaft seal Paint block new headlight adjusters Tranny crossmembers re-run the wiring So yeah, I wanna pull it out and get a good look at everything. I wish I had a sandblaster!

Re: Need New Flexplate. Pull Motor Out?
If your going to pull the motor...id consider the rear main seal and an oil pan gasket too.

Re: Need New Flexplate. Pull Motor Out?
Just so you know what you're up against...
This is what happened to me when I decided to swap my motor mounts. Copied from Build Thread: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hey...Grease Good ta see ya..... I'm gettin my a$$ kicked on this one.... I'm just closing in on the motor mount swap.... Anyway..... I'm down to finishing up the column.....and the attached shift linkage an...an...an..........and maybe that's it. Other'n boltin it back together.. I Gotta think 'bout that....Either way....I am ok to start it after I wire the engine harness....Oh. After I finish plumbing the aux. fuel tank (so it will be the only tank) because I yarded the one out from behind the seat....Just have to bend the rest of the tubing....I'll take a pic later. Anyway, here's a couple for ya... Attached Images __________________ Les Hunter '59 3803 someday to be 3853 '63 GMC K1000...351E, TH400 Daily '66 GMC 4000...351C, 5&2

Re: Need New Flexplate. Pull Motor Out?
Nice looking project. But beware...
These types of projects are addicting...start with just a flexplate change and the next thing you know you've got a new engine, new paint, new upholstery, new everything!!! Ask me how I know...sigh! Tom

Re: Need New Flexplate. Pull Motor Out?
Got these done. Now to clean up the engine bay and firewall. The firewall looks like Swiss cheese with all the mystery holes drilled into it. Thank god for welders.
