Bought my first diesel. 85 K30
Went yesterday and came home with this. It needs some work though. Currently not running. Was said to have just died and could never restart. Thinking fuel issue. It does have some rust that needs attention in the rockers, one cab corner and a section in the drivers side floor. It has Eagle rims on it. I may try to trade them out for a set of classic Alcoas or something similar. Not too crazy about the burb front end. It will probably eventually get changed out for a quad setup. Going to take alot of cleaning. It has been setting for the last year. It has Superlift 4" springs up front and the back set of springs is stacked. I will get a pic of them later. Not even sure how many are there. lol. Anyways heres some pics.

Re: Bought my first diesel. 85 K30
It came with an extra 6.2 complete with injection pump too. Hopefully I can get this thing figured out and running. If nothing else I can pull that out and either put in my 350 or 454 but would like to see how the diesel runs. The mpg's of the diesel should be alot better than the gas. A big plus in my book.

Re: Bought my first diesel. 85 K30
Congrats! Looks like a nice truck.
If she was running along and just died out, that could mean a failed injection pump. Air infiltration is usually more of a progressive issue that starts with a slight miss and ends with not running/starting. I had that exact thing happen to me on my 83. If you follow the advice given in the other thread, you'll know if the pump has quit. That said, these 6.2's are not power house, but will return pretty decent mileage. I had another 83 K2500 4wd that got 23 mpgs regularly on the highway with a TH350 trans (no OD). That big heavy dually won't get that good of mileage, but I bet mid teens are possible. The gas trucks would only be single digits.

Re: Bought my first diesel. 85 K30
If by chance it is the IP I do have a spare. Just hope that one is good. Hopefully this ol 6.2 will fire up and run good. It did come with a spare 6.2 so I could always swap them out but would like to keep from putting in one of my extra gas engines.
This has the 400 trans in it now. Getting tired of shifting gears so these last two K30's I bought were automatics.

Re: Bought my first diesel. 85 K30
This is kind of what I have in mind for it if it ever gets that far. This is a photoshopped pic of a crewcab. Probably not on 22's but maybe some 19.5's or something. Shoot I think I would be content with it on 16's if it came out as nice as this one. Simple but nice.

Re: Bought my first diesel. 85 K30
I looked these up in the Military Manual for troubleshooting Cranks But Will Not Start:
I'll email you the manual if you pm me your email address or just download TM 9-2320-289-20 from the interweb. Has good troubleshooting info for our diesels and other similar systems that are shared with the Civy models. CRANKS BUT WILL NOT START Step 1. Check to see if there is fuel in tank. Add fuel if empty. Step 2. Check fuel supply and return lines for restrictions, looseness, or damage. Tighten or replace if damaged. Step 3. Inspect fuel filter, fuel pump, and injector pump for leakage. Replace leaking components. Step 4. Check for inoperative glow plugs and glow plug system. Step 5. Check for contaminated fuel by draining fuel from fuel filter drain cock into suitable container. Check color of fuel to determine if the correct fuel is in fuel system. Drain fuel and replace if contaminated or incorrect fuel is in fuel system. WARNING Diesel fuel is flammable. When disconnecting fuel lines to test fuel flow, direct fuel spray away from source of ignition. A fire extinguisher must be on hand in work area. Failure to follow this warning may result in serious injury or death to personnel. Step 6. Check fuel pump operation. Disconnect input fuel line at the fuel filter. Disconnect pink lead from fuel injector pump. Use a quart capacity container, and crank engine for 15 seconds. Container should be at least ¼ full or contain ½ pt (0.231) of fuel. Install low pressure gage in fuel line. Crank engine for 15 more seconds. Fuel pressure should be 5.5-6.5 psi (38-45 kPa). Reconnect fuel inlet line to fuel filter, and reconnect pink lead to fuel injector pump. If fuel flow is insufficient, replace fuel pump. Step 7. Bleed fuel filter. Bleeding: 1.Connect both battery negative cables if disconnected. 2.Remove fuel tank cap. NOTE An assistant is needed to perform steps 3-6. (I performed these with a remote starter switch by my self) 3. Connect a plastic tube to vent plug port in base assembly with free end of tube in a suitable container. 4. Disconnect pink fuel injection pump shutoff solenoid wire. 5. Open vent plug at top of base assembly. Crank engine for 10–15 seconds, then wait 1 minute for starter motor to cool. Repeat until clear fuel is observed coming from tube connected to vent plug port. 6. Close vent plug at top of base assembly. Remove plastic tube from vent plug port. 7. Connect pink fuel injection pump shutoff solenoid wire. 8. Install fuel tank cap. 9. Start engine and allow to idle for 5 minutes. 10. Check fuel filter for leaks.

Re: Bought my first diesel. 85 K30
Evidently he is the one who built this truck originally. I hear he has built a couple of bad*ss pulling trucks. I am going to call him and get some details on it.

Do you know who owns this blue truck? I said it was retarded and well, someone in charge of this website told me that it was against the rules of this website to say that a truck is retarded.
