VIN history...NOT decode
I am trying to get a history about my truck as I want info about a fifth wheel hookup that was installed. I have the 13 character VIN but pre-1981 can not look up. I know it spent all/most of its life in Concorde, Calif. just prior to my purchase. Purchased from dealer who purchased from auction so no help there. I appeal to the smarter than me Forum Friends! Ideas??

Re: VIN history...NOT decode
If you post the VIN here plenty of people will be able to walk you through the decoding process. Each sequence of numbers and letters means something specifc, so the vin will only give you general info. If you need a list of specific options (like trim package and interior options), try to find your SPID sheet.
EDIT: Sorry, misread the title. Check with your local DMV, maybe they can help.

Re: VIN history...NOT decode
I would say it was dealer installed maybe and there is probably no paperwork on it. I think however you can get the info on a particular vehicle throught the GM Heritage Center. You have to pay for it from what I can remember.

Re: VIN history...NOT decode
No idea how it works in your state or all the states the truck has ever been registered in, but here in OK you can get a title history on a vehicle. Heck used to you could go in to a tag office here and for $1 get a complete history with owners names and addresses listed as shown on the titles. You'd also get lien history this way.
Oklahoma did away with safety stickers in the late 90's here. But back when they were a requirement and you had friends of friends who had friends with friends who liked butterfingers (employee of the month movie reference there, made me laugh), you could get a year by year history of a vehicle showing owners name and the mileage recorded at time of the safety inspection. Since they were a required yearly thing, it gave a nice mileage history since it was impossible to tell how many times cars had rolled over the 100,000 mark due to only 5 digits on the odometer. Was amazing how many people tried to say "it only has 30,000 miles on it!" simply because of the 99,999 limit of the odometer, when in fact it had 230,000 miles on it. Oh yeah, people still do that actually. But for what you're wanting, start with the local agency that handles the process for license plates and renewals. Take some broken butterfinger bars though just in case.
