Original radios
Here is one for the experts out there of chevy truck knowledge. The 1970 I have has a original AM radio. In 1970 did they have FM radios or even 8 tracks in the truck radios? The reason I was asking I was thinking about maybe putting one in it. I have a original underdash 8 track I plan to put in mine. But I thought if I have a am fm 8 track that was for the same year I might go that route. I have a few old radios to restore and I thought I might fix a fm if it was for that year. I bought out a original Delco radio repairmans shop years ago and have some items left.

I'm not sure but I had a 1980 Trans Am with an 8 track. Was there even such a thing in 1970?

If I am correct the fm option was only for 72 models. I may be wrong. I'm looking for a original am/fm radio but they are tough to come by.

Well I was completely wrong about 8 tracks. Not really my cup of tea. We had "regular" cassettes when I was a kid. 8 tracks go back to the 40's so never mind anything I said about 1980 Trans Ams and 8 tracks. They were becoming obsolete around then.

I think you could get a dealer ad on gm 8-track that would mount below the dash, but not in dash with the radio. I think 71 may have been the first year with the option for am/fm, but not 100%.
There is a write up of how to convert a factory am radio to run an audio cable to plug into a phone or mp3 player, but still look like a factory am radio in the dash...which seems like a sweet option to me. I paid the price to have a factory am/fm, even got an electro-tech speaker, it looks cool but leaves plenty to be desired. |

I want to keep it more from the era of the truck over having a perfect sound. As far as 8 tracks goes to me a good tuned up 8 track is not that bad. I have probably around 50 or more old auto radios that are roughly 1975 or before. I have a wonderbar from the 50s to a original 8 track for a pontiac that was mounted under the dash for a firebird that came out in the late 60s. I have a few of the early am-fm 8 tracks if I can find them. The one at this time I am planning on restoring and putting in is this one.
 As far as 8 tracks the endless loop tape was invented in the early 50s ,RCA came out with the 8 track case around 57 and I think Ford came out with a 8 track for cars in 65. If I run across old 8 tracks and records I usually get them if they are in good shape and music I like. I started out working on this type of stuff and went into computers. I also started collecting old tube radios and now I have all kinds of radios and jukeboxes. I only have a couple of jukeboxes due to size . I am also slowing down on radios because I have run out of room. |
