Heater box removal

Well the secret disappearing coolant has been solved. I have a leaking heater core.

I was told by a friend that I could get it out through the inside of the truck, Nope. So I began removing the heater box holding the core to the firewall. Got down to the last bolt and I am stuck.

How do you get to the bottom far left (under the blower motor) bolt holding the heater box to the firewall out?

There has to be some secret other than removing the entire wheel well hopefully because the bolts holding that to the front quarter panel turn but don't come lose.

I tried all my extensions and knuckle drives and I just cannot get to it. Any help is greatly appreciated.

truck is a '69 K10

Re: Heater box removal

You do not have to remove the inner finder. But you will need to drop it down some. Start by removing the bolts closest to the door until you can pry it enough to get your hand inside.

Re: Heater box removal

the word on the street is you can get to that bolt without taking out the inner fender. I think it might be possible bu only if you already know exactly where it is. I couldnt do it and just took the whole inner fender out. I think I cut a few bolts off to get it out and its stillsitting in the shop waiting for grinding and painting... on my long list of things to do.

Even if you get the bottom bolt out you probably won't get it back in. You will also have trouble getting the gasket in place. I would just pull the inner fender out.

Re: Heater box removal

Just did it this yesterday. I'm in the process of putting a vintage air system in so the heater box had to go.

1. Remove hood.
2. Remove passenger side hood hinge
3. Long wobble extension, socket.

No need to touch the fender.

Good luck.

Re: Heater box removal

I just did this too but didnt remove the hood or hinge. Just drop the inner fender down. It also depends on your hands size. Not a fun job.

Re: Heater box removal

I removed the hood and inner fender Not necessary to remove the hood but the inner fender is actualy very easy to remove It actually allowed room to access a whole bunch of stuff that you would not think of.

I loosened the top fender bolts to to get the heater box back in. Made it easier to seat the new gasket for the blower fan to fire wall.
