250 L6 turbo? What do you think?
Withe the recent purchase of some 250s i am rebuilding one i ran across while searching parts some info on turbo charging one of the motors. has anyone done it? or have some input?. below are links with some info. with what info i could find i was thinking the blow through setup is the best option. from my understanding.
get a smaller turbo with a waste-gate biggest issue seems like it would be the manifold. get my fuel pressure up get the oil situated which would not be very hard. realistically could i eliminate the need for an intercooler? and doing this with a stock setup 250 with 3 speed standard tranny and whatever standard rear end in 84 chevy c10 would be. ( the tag is gone) options list says standard 1gq1. Am I asking to much of the stock setup? I would also like to say since i am rebuilding this engine from just a block It is possible to get whatever internal parts i need or should get. well not knowing enough about turbos to tell you yes or no i would think you would end up with around 300 hp or so which could be had with a lightly modified 350 for alot less cash, but the turboed inline 6 would have alot more cool or wow factor???
i myself would go with a stock/modified say header and 4 barrel intake inline 6 jmho |

well yes I have my heart set on a 250 and the cool or wow factor is a lot more important to me than a 350 lightly modded. the 4barrel is good idea I did not consider that. Thank you for the input and by the way out of curiosity what year is your L6? and does it have the integrated head?
I have been looking at cams for a more "turbo friendly" cam so to speak and isky has a pretty nice one that seems very well suited i would end up getting the entire kit to go along with the cam. http://iskycams.com/cart/index.php?m...=4966&cPath=77

I think it would be limited by the small ports of the engine if big power is your goal.
Personally I would say you could go for 350hp before you get to a difficult build. Lastly if you drive your truck alot a turbo 6 to me you would have to be a fuel miser for a truck. I aquired a 2.3 turbo'd pinto motor with all the good factory stuff, and I am bench racing dropping that in to my F100 project if its running weight is low enough. |

Are the intake and exhaust ports on the head what you speak of? if so I was looking on inliners international and langdon stovebolt a 4 angle valve job is highly recommended when building any L6
-20 ° top, 45-46 ° seat, 65 ° throat, 80 ° bottom the block itself if worse comes to worse either a not worry about it because big power gain is not a goal with my L6 or if i refuse to not do a turbo i could grab a 292 block i think the exhaust ports a little bit larger.

Yes the intake, and exhaust ports are a bit small. Plus also being siamesed it doesn't help either.
Multi angle valve jobs are always a good improvement |

The turbo setup off a carbureted Buick 3.8L V6 is a good match because it's a simple draw through setup and the 250 I6 is just slightly bigger than the original application. Make sure you get the entire setup with the matching carburetor. From there it's just a matter of plumbing it all up.
Of course, if you are looking at the turbo setup and it's on the original motor...then just grab the enitre engine and put that in the truck instead.

Why make the exhaust so... Angled? Doesn't seem like that would flow very well?

I built a twin turbo setup on my big block corvette years ago and am really pleased with the results. Built all the hot side and cold side and modified my own carb. Took all winter to get done but it sure does put a smile on your face when the boost comes up. I built my motor to take some abuse and run up to 15 lbs of boost. You should be able to run 5 lbs without any problem as long as you make sure you arent detonating and or running lean and run conservative timing and it will probably surprise you how much more power it will add. I wouldnt be too concerned about exhaust ports, ect for street use. If you were out to extract every bit of power for a drag car then yes but for a cruiser it will work fine. I am running stock cast iron oval port heads and they work great.

If you have a good timing light with a dial that you can dial back and read advance, that will tell you where and at what rpm your timing curve is. To monitor air fuel ratio get an air fuel meter that uses an oxygen sensor so you can get an acurate reading under boost. I use an Innovate Motorsports hand held meter and just have it sitting on the console. a great forum for turbo stuff is The Turbo Forums. Thats where I learned all the particulars on how to do mine. I am currently running a 468 big block with a 4l80e trans and 3.08 gears. The thing I love about turbos is you can have a stock sounding(idling) car that cruises around real nice, starts AND shuts off when hot, and gets decent mileage, provided you keep your foot out of it. There's no bottle to run empty and no whine, (blower drive belt) so its stealthy. But when you want the power, just floor it and hang on, I'm talking blowing the tires off at 70 mph and drifting sideways at full power. Dont want that much power, simply adjust your wastegate setting and cut the boost back.

Have you searched on Hot Rod Magazines site for a turbo inline six in an ole fleet master? It was tan and made right much power. I don't know the numbers but it sure did go. A lot of guys here use the 194 ci head to make power. Hope this helps. Something to think about, in our race car we run a 230 with a 194 head, stock bottom end except for pistons. Clifford intake, 350 carb and headers. Cam is kinda radical but it's a race car. DUI distributor and really that is about it. We get it up to 6800 rpm. Some guys get'em up to 7000rpm to 7200 rpms.
