Re: TH350 or TH400?
TH400 is built to be more heavy duty. It was made to go behind big blocks. If I remember correctly the chevy bell housing should be the same.

Re: TH350 or TH400?
X2...we have a tubo 400 behind Dad's 496 bigblock in his 3/4 ton and we haul heavy loads all the time and bang shift if or burn rubber with it and that tranny is bullet proof. A th 350 is more for a 350 or smaller small block, there are torque and horse power limits as far as I know that you can find so you can tell. My 2 cents. T.J.

Very cool, so a th350 is perfect for the 283.. Does anyone know if its the same size as the PG?

Re: TH350 or TH400?
Yes a TH350 would be perfect behind a 283. As for fitment, it will bolt right up to the engine. As for the length, that depends on which TH350 you have. There are 3 different tailshaft lengths....3, 6 & 9". Either way, moving the trans crossmember and having the driveshaft shortened are easy and inexpensive to do.

Re: TH350 or TH400?
I prefer the shorter 3" tail shaft housing, but the 6" isn't too bad. All you need is a stock torque converter. Additionally, if you can find a TH350C, which has the lockup torque converter, that will help your mpg's a little. Of course you will have to wire up the lockup feature.

Re: TH350 or TH400?
the 400 is obviously beefier but i wouldn't be afraid of the 350 behind a big block

Re: TH350 or TH400?
I'm a manual trans guy myself....but I had a 69 Chevelle SS w/396 BBC and TH400 trans. That trans took a lot of abuse and I never had any issues with it. I'd have no problem running another TH400 in the future. I've never had a TH350, so I can't speak on those.

Re: TH350 or TH400?
If you haven't bought a transmission yet, you might even want to consider a 200r4. Plenty strong, and you've got 3 gears plus an overdrive. Enable the lock-up feature, and you've essentially have a 5 speed automatic.
There's nothing wrong with a th350 or a th400, though. Both would be a great choice, but if you've got a 283, I would prefer the th350.

Re: TH350 or TH400?
Th350s come in 6, 9, and 12 inch tailshaft lengths. There is no 3 inch.

Re: TH350 or TH400?
isn't gear vendors like over $2000. I will be putting the 700r4 behind my 283. I have a one piece aluminum drive shaft to go behind. I also have a 700r4 behind the BB in my other truck. I had a TH350 in my 4x4. I did replace it with a 700R4 and I think I gained about 4 mpg after that. The tranny had mucho miles on it and was still kicking.
