fuel sending unit/gas tank cleaner
best place to get a fuel sending for my 72 gmc? they have one at summit for $40 but it has a vent tube that mine doesnt. im sure it could be capped as my tank is already vented couldnt it? also any ideas on the best way to clean a gas tank. i will have to remove it im sure. looked down in it with a lite after i took sender out and alot of surface rust on walls above fuel level. any kind of bada** cleaner i can get to swash around in there to clean that out? ive heard of people putting rocks in them and tumbling them but that doesnt seem very user friendly. let me have your ideas guys. thanx, rich

50/50 mix of water and muratic acid. You can get it at pool supply stores. Be careful and wear gloves/ eye protection. I have cleaned gas tanks with small gravel. We ratchet strapped the tank to the back wheel of our tractor after jacking it up and ran it in low gear at idle.

Re: fuel sending unit/gas tank cleaner
I had the same problem but with more symptoms. My engine would cut at idle. The carb float was full of fine rust. My fuel lines are also full of fine rust.
I inspected the tank after removing it and the walls were coated with that same fine rust. I took the tank to a radiator shop, they cut holes in the sides, sandblasted her, then welded those up and coated the insides with "renew." It has a lifetime warranty and is supposed to make your tank better than new. I declined having the outside renewed so I primed and spray painted it. I plan to reinstall the tank next spring. It cost more yes, but from what I can gather, it is the best thing one can do to an old tank. |

Re: fuel sending unit/gas tank cleaner
This dilute acid bath sounds nice but what then? What's going to prevent your tank rusting all over again?
That was a big reason why I went with the "renew" process. |

Re: fuel sending unit/gas tank cleaner
The tank could be coated after the cleaning. Eastwood sells a few options. Imo the best protection is not letting old gas set in the tank for long periods. With the prevalent use of ethanol, this issue is even worse as ethanol is hygroscopic, ie it absorbs moisture from the surrounding air.

Yes! 1973 25 Gal. blazer tank..with a 1984 k5 blazer sending unit (0-95 ohm) works perfect with factory gauge. Some other models the resistance range will make fuel gauge innaccurate..
