coming to realize that finding one for $3k which seemed great but needs lots of stuff doing was a false economy, and in fact just spending the extra would have been more efficiently spent money. Can't see mine ever looking that good..

That is probably true, but if you don't mind doing the work, anything your truck needs done you can learn how to fix here.
