1966 327 motor mount with power steering

Modified a new motor mount today to accept my power steering pump bracket. Thanks for all the help from the forum. Jim

Is that for 327 only or would that work on 283 ?

Thats good to know.
I looked at mine today and looks like I would have the same problem as 1966burb. I have what I will call the cradle that the pump sits in but it was out of a 64 chevelle. Were the cradles all the same ? Was thinking of making a bracket that comes off the water pump and over to the P/S pump.

If you have the lower mount (cradle) and the adjuster bracket shown above, then that's all you need to mount the PS pump in your 283 with a short water pump. The cars '68 and earlier and the trucks '67 and earlier used that same PS pump bracket assembly.

I'm going to throw this out for thought but I used a GM service recall kit that was issued about the same time the broken motor mount issue recall in 1971. This ps bracket was a three bolt attachment and placed the ps bracket between the motor mount and the block. It came with the new ps bracket, one new redesigned GM motor mount and three longer bolts. I may have the GM box and instructions from that in my shop somewhere since I installed it just a couple of months ago on my frame up. My original 66 ps bracket was just as pictured with 2 bolt attachment. The new design motor mount was a the later part number change and used through 1972 production. Mark

Hot Fun.
When you took off the original P/S bracket and motor mount did you notice any stress or cracking ? There must have been a reason why the recall. I noticed origianaly that 1966burb thought that his bracket had a torch taken to it but later on it looked like it was the motor mount that was torched.
So if you have the old style bracket it should go on top with mods to mount and if you have the recall kit it goes under the motor mount.
I'll bet those recall kits are like hen's teeth.

I really stumbled across this thing as when I was taking apart the original 327 with factory power steering from my 66 C30 it looked exactly as what 1966burb has pictured from his. The 2 bolt ps bracket was installed between the block casting and the motor mount. I think this was factory installed and caused uneven stress on the motor mount by being wedged 3/16ths of the ps bracket on two of the bolts and not the third mounting. I got to looking into nos motor mounts for my frame up and realized GM had a part number change on the mount around 1970 or 71 for the 64-72 trucks. This was when GM was having issues with the drivers side mount breaking under torque and age and lifting the engine under torque yet pulling the solid carb linkage rod to full throttle position without the drivers intentions. The GM recall first involved inspection of the motor mounts and if the drivers side was broken or cracked it got the newly redesigned motor mount that wont allow it to pull apart when the rubber breaks. If the motor mount was not broken the GM dealer was to install a cable and bracket deal on the drivers exhaust manifold and down to the top of the frame. You see those cable kits all over eBay but when I was looking for the nos motor mounts I stumbled across the mount in one of these GM ps upgrade brackets with mount. It looked like it was part of the same recall but if the vehicle had ps the rear ps bracket was changed out to get it mounted evenly under the three bolt motor mount attachment. Another note here is I believe GM recalled and exchanged then destroyed all the earlier motor mounts without this new design. I never could locate a single one of the original GM pre 1970 V8 motor mount #'s anywhere.

the reason more than likely that the bracket was under the mount is simple.ignorance, error or laziness on the persons who have replaced that insulator over the years as a mount has broken. when they took out the old insulator,they usually just take out the three bolts holding the insul to the block, two of which also hold the bracket. what they fail to do is loosen the other end of the bracket. they go to install the new insulator and now that bracket is laying next to the block. the insulator goes over top of the bracket. that simple. they may have a problem starting the bolt from underneath unless the insulator is still loose on the upper bolts.
the other scenario is that they have the newer insulator with the bigger rubber surface and the bracket won't fit on top any more and underneath it goes.
The early insulators broke pretty easy. if one really wanted to you could pop them at will esp with an a/trans. the newer style gave a much greater bonding area and by that time the pump mounting had been changed and I imagine that you could still have bought that original insulator up into the nineties. you would have known that difference though to probably get one as most would ask for a sbc eng mount insulator. just think of how many were made.

Hi Ron.
Not sure if you mean that you found all the pieces or if you are asking me if I found them.
So far I have found the heater pieces.
The same member was not sure if he had the P/S brackets as there is to much snow for him to go out to his junk yard.
So still not sure on them.

When starting on my truck almost two years ago I read this thread and thought "don't be a hillbilly, do this right when you get to it and modify the motor mount". about 18 months later, here i am, doing that step, modified the motor mount so the two bolt holes lined up and put the bracket on. Then i realized the bracket was nowhere near lined up, and i apparently did something wrong, so i came back here.

I have one of the three hole brackets that goes under the motor mount anyways, no way to make this fit over top without modifying the bracket and whacking that third bolt off. I swear, i have more hard to find and strange parts on this truck...
