Who the heck are these guys?

O.k., tinkering on my "new" 62' c10, changing a few things to what I like. Even though the picture on the tailgate is very tastefully done, I just didn't want anything like that on my tailgate.
After studying it for a while, I realized that it was a decal instead of an airbrush mural painted on. I grab my heat gun and heat it up and start peeling it off. I was pretty happy that I was going to have an all blue tailgate. As I start peeling, I start seeing another mural underneath the decal. This one was painted on and was actually a beautiful piece of work. I called my wife out and we got to really looking at the mural and neither one of us have a clue who the 2 dudes are and what the mural depicts. It is so beautifully done, I really hate to paint over it. Anyone got any idea what it is all about?

Re: Who the heck are these guys?

That's Pancho Villa on the left and General Emiliano Zapata on the right. The battle scene is a depiction of the Mexican Revolution of 1910. Although they look to be fighting each other in the picture, the two were actually allies during the revolution.

That's awesome. Don't paint over it.

Very interesting, History was never one of my better subjects. I will read up on it just out of curiosity. Thanks for the history lesson. Troy

Re: Who the heck are these guys?

And I do agree, it is very well done, beautiful piece of work. That puts me in a dilemma, That really isn't what I had in mind for my tailgate but to nice to paint over. I will probably have some type of wrap or decal made to back over the mural.

Re: Who the heck are these guys?

I am quite certain there are some mexicans that are into older trucks that would kill for this. Sell it to someone that would appreciate it, and who knows maybe you can get another tailgate and money.

Re: Who the heck are these guys?

For God's sake paint it! Oweeeee! My eyes. My eyes!

It's in Maine now not southodeboarder. So a mural of bear in the woods or a fishing boat or a tater farm will be perfect.

I am gonna probably have the decal shop cut me out a flat black decal to fit into the tailgate insert.

Re: Who the heck are these guys?

It isn't my style either, but someone skilled obviously put some time into that and it's a shame to cover it up. I'd hang it on the wall or sell it for enough $$ to paint another tailgate to match the truck.

Re: Who the heck are these guys?

I'm curious where that truck is from and who did the airbrush work. That style of black and white airbrushing with a "traditional" Mexican outlaw scene is super-popular out here with the lowrider guys. There's a guy out here named Mark Machado, (aka "Mr. Cartoon") that has done some work that's absolutely incredible. Here's an ice cream truck he did a couple of years ago. I've seen the truck in person, and I walked around it for nearly 30 minutes, and every time I made another lap, I saw something I missed.

This style is not my cup of tea, but I greatly respect the talent that these guys have. I look at it from the artistic standpoint, and it's amazing what they can do with an airbrush.

There is no signature on the mural, the pics I took are not really clear but it truly is beautiful , though not my cup of tea also. Talking with the previous owner tonite, he said the previous owner paid $2700 for the tailgate mural and a mural on the glove box door. I haven't peeled the decal off the glove box door yet but previous owner said there is a mural of Poncho's wife. I will get to it this weekend and I will post the pics.
