Official Introduction: 1971 K5 Blazer
I'm the proud owner of a 1971 K5 Blazer. The body is pretty straight and with minimal rust. When I say minimal, I could only find rust on the front passenger fender on one corner. The rockers are solid and so is the floor. She is running and I have been cruising her around town the past couple of days. I have been bitten by the bug in a bad way. I literally have been having dreams about my K5. The plan for this truck is a dependable family hauler. It's basically going to be used for camping, beach trips and cruising with the top off with my family. It will do some mild wheeling, but nothing too crazy. A cool family friendly classic 4x4 is the name of the game.
I have befriended the mechanic at my job's motor pool. He has a full shop at home. We have begun to set up a plan to make the 350 small block a semi-performance highway friendly engine. First thing he suggested is to swap out the points ignition system to a HEI distributor. Currently looking at MSD Pro Billet w/6A box or the MSD Ready to Run with Blaster Coil 2. He also suggested replacing the fuel pump as well. He said he could have it done in an hour or so, but I stopped him there. I explained I wanted to do the work myself so I can learn how to work on the engine. I will gladly pay him for his time and lessons. We are looking forward to a long stay and many more posts to come. I have managed to get up to page 10 as of 0900 this morning. Absorbing as much info as I can't get. I will become a premium member shortly. |

Re: Official Introduction: 1971 K5 Blazer
Welcome and more pics please. Spid on the inner glove box door is always wanted. Interior shots too. Looks like a real good start. Not a lot to do. If it runs good now I'd leave it as is. I would not do the 6a box as its something else to have go bad. I would do the msd hei drop in distributor. You have to replace the power wire from the fuse block to the distributor coil when you do. It has a resistor wire with fusable link that will burn out with the upgraded distributor. Does it have a two or four barrel on there now? Switching it to a four barrel will
Wake it up a lot.

According to the SPID, the original paint was Ochre. The PO had it painted blue. I'm seriously thinking about going back to the Ochre color someday.
