What steering column

I am fitting a Camaro front clip to my 58, what would be the best column to use I want it to be an auto column change.

I suggest a van column up to 82, had the key in the dash.

X2 on the van column- you get a period-looking tilt as well

X 3 on the Van column if you want a clean looking column with a column shifter or you could cut the shifter off and blend in the place where it goes with proper filler.
Most of the later model car and truck colums with the key in the column are way too cluttered and bulky for our older trucks and look really out of place when you put one in even if you stick a custom wheel costing several hundred dollars on top of it.

In my 48 I'm planning on running a 70 Chev C10 four speed column that I have had for years that came out of my first born's truck after I totaled the truck. It's a very clean column with a turnsignal switch that I can still get a replacement for but doesn't have the tilt that a lot of guys want in their custom trucks.

I like the van columns for all the above reasons, and you can usually still find them cheap at the u pull it yards.

I put an 82 eldorodo column in mine because 1) I wanted to get the shifter and dimmer off of the floor, 2) wanted factory turn signals, 3) wanted the anti-theft keyed feature, 4) proven quality design and construction, 5) eldo is front wheel drive and column is 4" shorter than van or standard truck or car ones which reduces the amount sticking out of the firewall, 6) came with built in cruise for future use, 7) tilt and telescope, 8) back up and neutral safety switch are built into the column. Yes is is a bit bulky. I adapted a 48 truck wheel to keep it sort of stock looking.

Flamming river here... not to bad a price on plan steel column plus you just paint it what ever color you want.

I used an Ididit on mine with my clip, oddly enough I orded a paintable one cuz I'm cheep but they sent me stainless by mistake (nice bonus)

also found that a colapsable steering link from a jeep cherokee fits right into the splines on the box and only had to use a small piece of double D rod to join the link to the coluum with 1 bolt. worked great, cost $20 and no rag joints or the insane price for the flaming river U joints to hook it all up.

I wonder if a late model column from front driver like a Cutlass Ciera or Buick Park Ave would work. They have that same old school look.

OrrieG, I like the simple yet effective use of the shift cable. I find myself concerned when people use a piece of linkage from the column to the transmission do to torque load it could shift the transmission or at least move the valve inside the trans.

The cable you have has no flex restrictions.
