292 Offenhauser 4 Barrel Intake
I am thinking about installing the four barrel intake from Offenhauser on my dad's 292. I know some people on here are running them on their trucks and I wanted to hear what you guys thought of them. Also, I have a 600 cfm Holley 4160 on my 350 that will soon be replaced and rebuilt. Will this be fine on this intake?

600 CFM on a stock six will be to much, you really need to find a 390 cfm holley or equivalent

I had a stock 250 six with an offy intake and long tube headers and a 390 holley carb and it ran really well. the 600 will be waaay to big for that motor

Rich and Gimmey 64...I have a 600 CFM Edelbrock on my 292 and it runs fine. I am using a clifford intake and headers, as well as running an HEI. Runs a little rich but doesn't even bog when I floor it in 4th. If you jet down the holley a tad then you'll be fine. If a 600 CFM edelbrock will work on a bone stock 250 with headers like Larry from Twisted 6 has done...then a 600 holley should work on a 292 with an hei and Headers....If your not going to run headers then a 390 is as large as you want to go.

I really like the look and idea of four barrel powered 292 but unfortunately I can't spend another $500 on a 390 carb. I know his engine needs a new carb so I will probably just get a stock replacement for now.

I've seen plenty of 600 cfm carbs on 283 and 305 V /8's. Too much carb? Probably, but they seem to run ok. I've never hot rodded a 6 but a 292 is bigger than a 283 and if it's bored, its bigger than a 305 too.

A 600 holley will work. Just use a stiffer spring in the vac secondary pot.
Also remember the Offy places the carb sideways and the Clifford sets it in line with the motor. |

Has no one heard off re-jeting smaller with a Edelbrock strip kit. I have a 1404 on my 230 re-jeted and it runs fine with the 600, it was to rich to start so go to the Edelbrock website and order a kit...Vernski

One reason I don't like the offenhouser is because alot of times I have seen people drill on the block to hook up the water heating system. The clifford doesn't require that. I agree with vernski, as I had said before..you can jet down the holley a little.

It sounds like the 600 is possible. I was planning on jetting it down during a rebuild. Is the clifford a better intake than the Offenhauser? Or is it simply for perference.

Overall Clifford is the better choice for a few simple reasons...1 is that the water heating system is easy to hook up. 2 is that it flows better. 3 is you have a choice on which direction you want to set your carb. Keep in mind that the clifford intake will NOT fit with headmen headers. The headers you will want to purchase are clifford or Tom Langdon's Cast iron headers.

You could go a different direction and go with a Webber 32/39 and an adaptor for your one barrel manifold. Just saying.

my carb on my offy sat like a regular carb. you don't have to run it sideways. some say it is better for fuel distribution but this has never been proven. I don't know the price of the Clifford intake but the offy is only $250 brand new. they also come up on e-bay often.
