56' shortbed stepside vs. 61' shortbed stepside?

Guys,
Does anyone know whether or not a bed off of a 56' shortbed stepside will work on a 61' shortbed stepside? I was of the understanding that they would interchange, but I was looking at some sheetmetal parts in a catalog last night and they listed separate part #s for the actual bedsides between these two trucks. The fender #s and tailgate #s were the same, though.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks!

Re: 56' shortbed stepside vs. 61' shortbed stepside?

the stepside beds were pretty much the same from late 55-87. late 55-66 were the same except for taillights. mounting locations in the bedwood may be different, but the bed will work fine

fenders, taillights and some minor changes to the bed sides. front bed panel and tailgates were universal from late 55-87

Re: 56' shortbed stepside vs. 61' shortbed stepside?

Thanks for the response!!
That's what I was thinking, also. It threw me last night when I saw two different part #s listed for the bedsides. I couldn't for the life of me figure out what would be different between them.
Thanks again!!

Re: 56' shortbed stepside vs. 61' shortbed stepside?

I had to replace my 66 RR fender so I bought a 58 to use thought every thing was fine. During assembly I found that the 66 fender is deeper then the 58. I had to offset the bed to make it work.

The frame mounting points on the crossills are going to be different between the two. The '61 will be wider.

That's interesting to note.
I wonder if they are deeper for a deliberate reason like wider wheels or something.

I just measured from outside of lip to outside of bed wall. The 66 fender is 3/8 deeper.

Re: 56' shortbed stepside vs. 61' shortbed stepside?

Thank you all for the help.
John, I guess redrilling the mounting holes is all it would take to use the older bed on the 61', huh? If so, that's easy enough.
66farmer, hopefully 3/8" narrower on each side won't be enough to cause any tire and wheel fitment problems.
Thanks again, guys, for the help!!
