Straight Six Color

Alright Chevy experts, my 1964 straight six 230 is back from the machine shop. Does anyone know what color the engine would have been when it rolled off the assembly line in Baltimore? Was the oil pan, valve covers, side covers, and timing gear cover all painted the same color? Thanks for your expertise.

Cheers,

Dennis

If someone has the owners manuals from other years it would be nice to assemble the different years to everyone's benifit.

Re: Straight Six Color

The 194-230-250 where painted blue and the 292 was painted green. There is an account of a 194 being gray. But the 230
s where painted blue.

Yes, they were blue, but the tough thing is finding the correct shade of blue. Does anyone offer the correct shade of blue yet?

Yes, Duplicolor does offer some blues, but they are not the correct shade of blue Chevy used from '63-'66. A lot has been discussed about the greens. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...ry+correct+327

Re: Straight Six Color

I believe the 292 Green could very well be the same color as Detroit Diesel Green, also known as Alpine Green if I remember correctly.

Detroit Diesel Green is pretty easy to find. My local parts store has it in stock.

Maybe someone under 10 posts, come on, didn't you notice the blue overspray on fuel line? To be fair, 1977+ 292 engines were painted blue.

That's not over spray on the fuel line. I just happen to own that 292. Far as I know its the original engine. I do know the transmission was pulled(oem power glide) and replaced with a 4 speed. SM420 I think. That metal fuel line from the pump to the carb was originally blue. And if that's the oem engine..they may have repainted it when it was out. And no, not All the 77+ 292's where painted blue. I have an 84 that has a black 292. And many where painted chevy orange as well. 230 and 250 engines where blue. 292's where green from 63-66. I posted this to see if someone might no more then I do about paint codes. You don't have to be some grumpy about it. lol.

Re: Straight Six Color

Getting back to the original question. The OP was asking for someone to help him find the correct shade of blue for his 230ci. He wants to paint it blue, yes, but he wants to use the correct shade of blue.

If what I said above is correct, maybe we can help him by posting our BLUE engine pics. He can decide for himself if the "Chevy blue" we used is a good match for the factory color he wants. Be sure you include the paint name and paint code number. I'll start.

The last photo shows the factory overspray on the original 1965 bell.

This is Eastwood Chevrolet Blue Hi temp engine paint.

Re: Straight Six Color

When I had the Valves done one year on my 6, I bought some "Chevy 6 Blue" to re-paint the Head and Valve Cover. Can't remember the brand, but it was by one of the more popular paint companies out there. It stated "Chevy 6 Blue" right on the front of the can.

I was waiting for somebody to notice that . We know they were green with proof of several untouched originals, but why is the owners manual wrong ?

Re: Straight Six Color

My late built 65 C20 327 is alpine green. I have not seen a gray 327. Someone can solve the mystery with the grey 327s in pickups.

I believe 327's in 2-Ton trucks might have been Gray.

Simple mistake was made, and nobody caught it before the manual went to print.
