My project (1956 1/2 ton stepside, updated drive train and brakes) will finally be ready for inspection and tags this autumn.

Living in Vermont, things work a little different...

There are no titles issued for any vehicle over 15 years old, and as I understand it makes no difference what I actually paid for the rusted hulk or the blood, sweat and money that it took to get to the present condition- the sales tax paid at time of registration is based upon "fair value".

I've been trying to locate what "fair value" would be assigned to my truck, but finding nothing so far on Kelly Blue Book sites, Hagerty insurance auto value tool, etc.

Really don't want to get into a professional appraisal. Not opposed to paying a realistic tax. Just before doing battle at the DMV would like to be prepared.

Anyone know where I can find a bluebook price???

Nada has a book for old vehicles.

Can you find documentation on what maybe ten very similar trucks sold for in say the past six months around the country?

You could probably google 56 Chevrolet pickup for sale and find enough to keep you busy for days but find very similar trucks with real world pricing that is fairly close to what you figure the truck is actually worth if you had to replace it and print out those adds or printouts so you can come up with an "average" . That would give you a "this is what similar trucks are selling for or valued at" value that would seem pretty close to correct. Throw out the pipe dream adds that want 100K for the truck and don't show the 800 beaters that need a trailer with a winch to get home.

Thanks for the thoughts and replies. Both worked out well.

Found out today from the VT DMV that they show $10,500 as the tax value which, while no one likes to pay tax, seems pretty fair for a decent, updated truck with fresh paint- yet not a "trailer queen".

Found out I can have the value adjusted by obtaining an appraisal from most any car dealer, but probably won't open a whole other can of worms.

Will probably fork over the $630 in tax, tell the wife we won't have Christmas this year, and call it done!

My ongoing truck projects: 48 Chev 3100 that will run a 292 Six. 71 GMC 2500 that is getting a Cad 500 transplant. 77 C 30 dualie, 454, 4 speed with a 10 foot flatbed and hoist. It does the heavy work and hauls the projects around.
