help - CA smog parts list - 79 k10
So I finally got my truck running ok, and got the trans leak all fixed.
Next challenge is getting it smoged The motor is a 350, and right now it has just enough parts to keep it running. Only belt driven parts I have on is the alternator and power steering, I ran it with now power steering for a little bit, however that did not last very long… So I was kind of looking for a list of parts that I will need to get it smoged. From what I know of here are some of the parts: egr valve air pump charcoal canisters catalytic convert any information will help thanks! I’ll have to get some close ups of the bay, here is just an overview for the sakes of having a picture in this thread… |

Is the truck originally a CA truck or is it a 49 state truck? I think it makes a difference for what is required.

64swb is correct ... it'll make a difference if your truck was originally CA or Federal emissions. If it's original to the truck, that decal next to the hood latch should tell you.
You can also go to the GM Heritage Center website and download the 79 Chevy truck info kit at: http://gmheritagecenter.com/gm-herit...tion-kits.html On page 30 you'll find an emissions equipment chart that shows everything your truck would have had originally based on the engine, GVW, and CA or Federal emissions. |

Re: help - CA smog parts list - 79 k10
It is missing a lot for a 49 state model from my experience still.
Your best, and probably cheapest way is to grab a whole motor from pick a part. One thing you could do is swap in a TBI or Vortec motor. They are better then the carb'd smog motors when it comes time to do work too. Plus have better drive-ability. Every once in a while I saw a TBI silverado or suburban for dirt cheap on CL. Usually they have a bad transmission, and they do not want to fix it. They usually ask about $1000. So you could flash $750 grab what you need, sell parts, and scrape the rest. This could take outlay to less then $300 for the engine, and tranny. Or if you know people who know people. Out right pay for a smog test till you get the motor right. Or get the truck to pass function with a good cat, and tune up. Then pay someone to look the other way when it comes to visual. This is much easier to do since the smog tech only has to slightly lie or say it looked right to him. It is not that tough for them to do that vs a full on lie with a different truck to pass your smog. It just depends on what you wanna do in the end. |
