Using older Power Steering pump with newer box. Lines question.
So I'm converting to power steering on my '65. I have a pump that is the older style. I'm wanting to say it's just like the one I had on my 1972 C10 years ago and I have the box from a 1984 model. I'm sure somebody else was in my shoes, just checking what my options are. I'm going to take it to a Hydrolic place this week and see if he has anything to make lines. The '84 lines on the pump side (well the pressured line that screws into the pump), won't screw in due to different size fitting. The return line shouldn't be to big a deal except I can't use it because It was all corroded and twisted off. Hopefully my rambling made sense.

On my 1966 Suburban I used the power steering pump and brackets, (short water pump style ) from a 1969-1972 Chevy truck small block, also used but bought new, the same year power steering hoses. It all fit the power steering box and engine chassis combination. If you have the O-Ring steering box , CPP sells the adapters for the older hoses. Very easy swap.

The cheapest and simplest way is for you to change the fitting in the back of your pump to the later style. They simply unscrew with a 1 inch wrench. You can harvest a fitting out of basically any 80-90s era GM vehicle.
Unscrew your early style fitting from the pump (flare type) and replace it with the later one (o-ring type). Its a two minute operation.

Re: Using older Power Steering pump with newer box. Lines question.
Thanks guys! Good info! I'll check out those fittings on CPP. I have the power steering pump from the same truck that I was hoping to use but the brackets weren't going to work. I'm running a big block 454. Someone had put a pump on it sometime in the past but it didn't have a belt on it or anything. So I figured I'd just use it unless I found the right brackets, I could go back to the matching one.

Maybe I'm getting ahead of myself. If I could find the correct brackets for the '84 pump to the big block, I should only have to buy replacement lines for an '84.

Sure. Grab a 1" wrench and swap them out. Done deal. I do it this way frequently.
