paint question
i was wondering if anybody has ever done a whole vehicle of any kind with rattle cans, i have seen somebody it to a mid 70s el camino and it turned out pretty decent, and i have thought about doing it simply because i dont want to pay somebody to paint a truck that is going to get scratched up and possible dented when i can do it myself, and i dont have an air compressor so it was just a thought, let me hear yours.

Go for it! You can even keep a can of paint behind the seat for "touchups"

It can be done, and even look decent (as in a 10 footer). Just stay away from black, silver, anything with metal flake, and darker shades of blue.

<---been there, done that.
Let the paint dry for a month or so before trying to wax it, after that, keep it waxed. |

I've mastered the art of the rattle can. I have painted about 5 of our trucks and a couple other vehicles that way. If you put about 3 coats on and do a light wet sand, then your final coat it will gloss right up. Here is the last one I did this last spring.

I helped a friend rattle-can his truck. We used Dupli-Color paint and it turned out OK. He didn't want to sand down the surface rust, so we just painted over it and it dosen't look that great. On the rust-free places, it looks pretty good. It just wont last anywhere near as long as a real paint job.
If you wanted to spend a little more money, it wouldn't be a bad idea to rent or borrow a air compressor and a cheap spray gun. Go to a autobody store and get some cheap paint and spray your truck with that. It would look much better than rattle-canning it, but proably cost a bit more. Or you could give it one of those $300 Maaco paint jobs and it would look OK.... Remeber, surface prep and good masking makes the job. Scrub the truck squeaky clean, go down to the carwash and spend $5 and half an hour getting it clean, let it dry fully, and then paint. Do a very good job making around everything too. Overspray on your windows, trim, grille, or taillights will make it look pretty sh!tty, but if you take your time even a rattle can job will look pretty good

I only needed about six cans to paint my first blazer. Two cans of green, two cans of black, and two cans of brown. Ha ha
