Is a steel and wood bed floor interchangeable?
I been thinking about my bed floor on what I could do for it. Its a steel floor, horribly dented. I was wandering if I could by a wood floor kit and interchange them.

Re: Is a steel and wood bed floor interchangeable?
My dad made his own steel bed from 1/8 inch steel sheet. If one can weld and cut metal, it might be something to think about.

Re: Is a steel and wood bed floor interchangeable?
To convert from steel to wood you'll need:
-A new different front panel for a wood bed. -Wood floor cross sills. -A wood floor rear cross sill. -A wood floor kit including wood, metal strips and a bolt kit (150+ bolts with nuts and washers as needed). I suggest you visit Mar-K's website www.mar-k.com |

Re: Is a steel and wood bed floor interchangeable?
Here's the specific Mar-K catalog page that shows what you'll need other than the floor parts. http://www.mar-k.com/Catalog/PDF/Cat...GMbed_kits.pdf
AND... instructions for a short bed, but a long bed should be similar except for part count. http://www.mar-k.com/Catalog/PDF/Ins...Conversion.pdf Last edited by FirstOwner69; 04-17-2014 at 09:36 PM. |

Re: Is a steel and wood bed floor interchangeable?
I'm in the same boat. I'm thinking about going with this kit. It installs over the metal floor. It's called the show deck.

Re: Is a steel and wood bed floor interchangeable?
I dont care for.that show deck , I wish that GM would have waited till 73 to go to metal bed floors the metal bed floor is one of the only downfalls to the 67 to 72 chevy and GMC trucks , before 67 all bed floors were wood , I have no idea how much that bed kit costs I just found that pic it shows a good view of everything ,,,

Re: Is a steel and wood bed floor interchangeable?
Doesn't somebody make a conversion strip for the front panel so you don't have to replace the front panel? Seems like I saw one in a catalog the other day.

Re: Is a steel and wood bed floor interchangeable?
That's it.
So let me ask; do the front panels bolt on or does it all weld together? Since I really don't weld I might be ahead to replace the whole piece. That way it won't be bent. |

Re: Is a steel and wood bed floor interchangeable?
The front panel is just bolted on.

Re: Is a steel and wood bed floor interchangeable?
If you did the conversion it would cost the same or little bit more. You can buy a rebuild kit out of Brothers for $800. Thats for the oak.

Re: Is a steel and wood bed floor interchangeable?
Just to muddy the water a bit more, I've seen new steel floors advertised... I think the cost may be a bit less than buying new parts to convert to wood.
I actually have cross sills for a conversion under the workbench but haven't generated the energy to do the conversion. Someplace there are drawings and measurements for cutting the wood floor. |

Re: Is a steel and wood bed floor interchangeable?
The specs are on GMCPauls website. Its easy to cut your own wood. I did it for $157 counting the SPAR varnish. It just takes a little time and patience.
