Bass Ackward Fuel Gauge
This is driving me nuts.. It's at the point that I know it's right in front of my face but I don't see it.
In my 66 C10 if the ignition is OFF the Gauge reads full,, turn the ignition ON and it goes to Empty... Change the wires,, right?... Guess again. A few time's during the daily drive I've noticed the gauge bump to a readable level... Sending unit replacement?... yeah,, OK maybe. But why the reverse reading on the gauge? I just recently acquired this and am noticing the previous owner's work as I get more and more into it so I want it to be "right"... some day soon I'll tear into it, but right now I just really don't like running out of fuel when I need to get some place.. LOL. Anyone else run into this? |

Re: Bass Ackward Fuel Gauge
A lot of electrical problems are simply fixed by installing a good ground. That's where I would start with the gauge.

Re: Bass Ackward Fuel Gauge
Your float on the sending unit is full of gas and just lays on the bottom.

Check ground at sending unit and at gauge.

Re: Bass Ackward Fuel Gauge
With the key in the on position, wiggle the wire on the sending unit. May not be making good contact.

Re: Bass Ackward Fuel Gauge
If I recall correctly, it will always read full when the key is off(I can't double check as all the wiring on my radiator support is disconnected right now). So the issues is just that you aren't getting a good reading from the sending unit.

Re: Bass Ackward Fuel Gauge
The needle in my '62 tends to fall either way with the key off.

Re: Bass Ackward Fuel Gauge
Well if I have a full tank in my 64 it'll read half when the truck is fully off. Just my two cents worth.

Re: Bass Ackward Fuel Gauge
Super THANKS to everyone for chiming in for the help.. Thats what makes this forum a great place... Members willingness to help.
63burban 63c-10 Hit the nail on the head... That was hard to find.. when I removed the sending unit and lifted the float arm manually everything worked fine.. but the arm was light as I ever thought it could be.. But,, I un-snapped the float and had to put it under a magnifying glass to find the crack,, it has such a small amount of fuel in it but must have been just enough to cause the problem. well.... Off to find a float.. Thanks again folks |
