Sounds like the gm starter solenoid issue, they are prone to heat then will not let the starter engage. You can jumper the starter posts and run a remote solenoid, or try another starter a fabricate a heat shield for the solenoid. It could also be a bad battery.

Sounds like the starter or battery after they get hot. Try tapping starter with hammer while someone tries to start it, if it fires up, it's the starter. If that doesn't work, try jumping it with another vehicle or if you have dual batteries jump it with that. If this works, it's your battery. Most parts store can test for too. Good luck.

Re: 1990 Chevy crew cab

Check the fluid level in your batteries if you haven't. Also check the battery grounds on the block, they get crap built up underneath them sometimes.

Another thing I've had problems with is a worn out starter wire generating too much heat when cranking and frying my battery.

The alternator wire to the battery sometimes gets corrosion built up under it, but I doubt thats it. I tend to agree with the other guys, something is getting hot on you.
