Was a 454 bb available in 1972?
This is a serious question because I thought 1973 was the first year for the 454 bb in our trucks?
This Dallas CL add says different. Do I need to futher my education? http://dallas.craigslist.org/dal/cto/4482721707.html

Re: Was a 454 bb available in 1972?
Wayne, Your right, 1973 was the first year for the 454. The chances that, that truck is a numbers matching 1972, 454 are Zero. But it might be a numbers consistent 400.

Re: Was a 454 bb available in 1972?
Yeah, that's a no go. If the numbers match, they either match that the block is a 402, or the motor is a 454 from a later truck. The 454 is as original to that truck as the rims and tires.
Edit: the 402 could have been bored but I don't know the calculations to come up with 454 cubic inches. I digress however, it would still be a 402 block. Last edited by leftybass209; 05-31-2014 at 05:40 PM. |

Whew!
Thanks guys. I thought I knew better but wanted to double check here to be sure ...see my signature as to why. I wonder if the seller realizes this or if he is going on the fact the fenders have 454 badges? Poor guy.

Re: Was a 454 bb available in 1972?
To accomplish the task of creating a 454 it requires substantial overbore in the realm of .125 or above I believe along with a 454 crank. There are those who say it is fine but that's a lot of material to remove from the cylinder walls. You can have a vin stamped into an engine block after it's been decked making it numbers matching. Another way to scam a buyer in my opinion. I have been into the Chevelle seen for years and trust me if people can squeeze a dollar out of you claiming it's an SS they will.

Re: Was a 454 bb available in 1972?
When the seller bought the truck at the Mecum Auction I wonder if they advertised it as an original 454 truck when it went up on the auction block. I'm pretty sure Barrett-Jackson does their due diligence before a vehicle goes on the auction block and I wonder if Mecum does the same?

Re: Was a 454 bb available in 1972?
You are correct. I would think no numbers are matching. It is a nice looking truck, but for that kind of money i would research it a bunch. Been for sale for quite awhile now...

Re: Was a 454 bb available in 1972?
Wayne,
the owner of the truck should further his education also. It sounds like he forked out some cash to buy this truck and took the word of the previous owner. I noticed the 8/454 emblems on the fenders which are an aftermarket item. Even if it was a "factory" 402, it has the wrong accessory brackets as the 72 and prior engines would have a short water pump with the alternator on the drivers side and the A/C compressor on the passenger side. It looks like a nice truck, not 25K nice but nice. May not even be a Cheyenne as most of what I see other than fender emblems looks to be a plain old 72 pick up. I would be looking for frame work as it may have been shortened also. Good eye on that. Tom

Yes, I'm constantly trying to educate myself with our trucks. This CL add is the essence of due diligence for a potential buyer. Agreed, VERY nice truck but the advertised inaccuracies makes you wonder about that 25K asking price doesn't it?

Re: Was a 454 bb available in 1972?
To me i consistor that number matching is a waist of time.If your going about trying to sell it and that all.then best thing to do it forget about the Chevy trucks save your money and find your self a 1969-70 Superbird or Daytona and spend your money that way spend your 150,000 now and in 5 years you can really make a profit.
Most of the guys in here really don't care about numbers matching. They will alter there trucks to what they want. Its like 1955-57 Belairs Or 1955-57 T birds if you keep them factory and don't update them they get low ball to the customs. No body wants to drive a truck with a power glide in it Or a 3 speed or a 4 speed granny If you change one part that was not factory on that numbers matching truck its not factory any longer wire harness Me i never trust a harness that's been in a truck for 50 years. A fire will take a 50,000 100k and make it a pile of trash |

It's only original once, but it can be cloned many times. To the satisfaction of the seller.

That's cool. We were just kidding about the SS stuff. I think I've seen pictures of your car - very nice.

Re: Was a 454 bb available in 1972?
It is funny how some times a thread can turn from a matter of fact to a matter of opinion and yes we all have ours.
I am good with all of it as long as it is not represented as something it is not. Like a cloned SS Chevelle or a factory 1972 numbers matching 454 pick up. I would pay good money for a nice clone over a complete mess of an original. At this point in my life, I would rather drive them rather than work on them. I do love my 64 pick up. It is the most basic truck there is and has a 292 with a granny 1st 4 speed. I love driving that truck. Roll the windows down, pull the choke out , pump it 4 times and fire it up. Then wait 10 minutes for everything to get happy and drive it away
