what does it weigh?
I have a hood for a 61 Chevy and a potential buyer. Problem. I am in eastern Nebraska and he is in Montana. I have rough dimensions for the hood but I don't have any idea what it weighs. I plan to call UPS so I can get an estimate of what it would cost to ship it. Does any one have a good idea of the weight of a 61 hood? Thanks all.

Re: what does it weigh?
Great. I did not think it was over 100. That will help him make the decision on if he wants to spend the money on it. I will post the shipping cost in case anyone else is making a similar decision. Thanks.

Re: what does it weigh?
I expected it to be expensive. Never considered grayhound though. They ship oversized items?

Re: what does it weigh?
x2 on greyhound. Shipped a spare mounted fender & carrier from TX to NC. Cost was around $60 and the box was like 5ft long after it was all boxed up. I've heard a lot of people ship hoods with them for around $100

Re: what does it weigh?
Greyhound has always treated me good , and I'm sure it will be well over 1/2 as much less to ship Greyhound vs UPS ..

Re: what does it weigh?
So the lady on the phone from greyhound was less than helpful. After I had already punched in all the info over the phone it transferred me to Miss Nasty and she immediately said I would have to tell her all over again. I had rough dimensions of 72x48x10 inches. She said 48 inches is too big and unless I could cut it down to 47 inches then they could not ship it. I told her it is an automotive hood and that it could not be cut down. She was a nag. In a big way. Now I understand my measurements were rough but I am just trying to get an estimate here. So I called UPS. Same thing. I punched in all the dimensions and weight and was transferred to an operator, after more button pushing. This time Anthony the operator was very helpful. Unfortunately the only price he could give me to ship a hood was $900. Yes, NINE HUNDRED dollars. He did tell me that if I go directly to a UPS store that they have discounts available and likely it would ship for around $250 or so depending on the actual packaged dimensions and weight. Maybe if I go to greyhound direct then they will be more helpful than the hag on the phone, but it sure make me not want to use them. It is really up to the guy who wants this hood as to how much he wants to spend on the shipping. Is there anyone who is traveling through here on the way to Montana who wants to help out another truck lover?

Re: what does it weigh?
I was going to buy a hood for my 60 Apache from a guy in Minnesota a few years ago and the shipping to CT would had been about $700 give or take a few hundred. I ended up finding one on Ebay that was only a couple hours away so I went and picked it up.
I did buy a roof for the same 60 Apache from a guy in California and he shipped it by Greyhound bus. It took over a month to get to me and if I remember right the shipping was around $100ish or so. The box he packed it in was beat to death but the roof only had one small dent which could have been already been there. Good luck

Re: what does it weigh?
The hood may be too large to fit on a bus. I have used Greyhound before too with a small outboard motor.. No issues.

Re: what does it weigh?
Too bad the hood does not meet the measurement requirements. I used Greyhound for the first time last week to ship a Jeep winch bumper they weighed 85 lbs. They have a special going online anything under 100 lbs ships coast to coast for $60.00. I shipped it from Michigan to Maryland. It arrived in less then 24 hours.

Re: what does it weigh?
I went online to Greyhound site and did a shipping estimate based on dimension of 72x47x10 and weight of 75 lbs. The online estimate was $117 but I also do not know where the nearest bus station to the buyer is. Looks like he may have a good two hour drive to pick it up anyway. I will let him make the call. Remember my measurements were done roughly so I could get that estimate. If it is actually a bit smaller then it could go. All this before we have even discussed a sale price. That's truck people for you.

Re: what does it weigh?
Most size weight issues your running into from normal carriers are going to be about the same,, give or take... over 70 lbs USPS is dead and... most time we have to ship common carriers.. I ship material all over the country,, sometimes its over 1,000 pounds.. so what we do is a google search for the Independent Truckers "Short Loads"... Theres thousands of online forums that Truckers check for items to haul that will fill up there trailers.
One example that we had is when we had a number of things to send to Texas and we found a Trucker coming from LA to FL... He stopped by Phoenix AZ picked it up and dropped it off in Dallas TX.... we shipped 65 fifteen gallon fruit trees for 200 bucks. |

Re: what does it weigh?
Agree with Turtleman. Best thing to do is find a trucker coming through. I dont them exactly, but there are websites to put in all your info and what you're willing to pay. Someone should snag it lookin for at least gas money.

Re: what does it weigh?
my concern work be reliablity, and covering cost if something happens. the trucker idea is great only if it come with peace of mind. im doing a road trip 3hrs away to save on shipping, but thats me. we love roadtrips for parts, but i know many cant, so if the trucker thing works in down for that!!!
