Converter Stall Speed - What Do You Run
Have a 66 C10 step side with a 300 HP 350 with 700r4 and 3.08 rear gears. I'm a tried and true 4 speed guy but the wife wants to drive this so you know the deal.....compromise = automatic.
Can anyone recommend what level of stall converter would be best with this combo? Not looking for a race unit but daily driver combo with decent manners. Folks I have talked to are all over the place 1500 to 3000 and up stall speed. What do some of you run with your combos? |

Re: Converter Stall Speed - What Do You Run
Go with a 10" ,they all stall a little different based on motor and gearing.!! 10" should put you in the 2500 - 3000 range, remember that does not mean it leaves the red light at that rpm.True stall speed is if you had a great set of brakes that would hold ,the rpm it starts loading the motor or pulling it down would be the true stall of any converter.

Re: Converter Stall Speed - What Do You Run
355/700r4/3:73 here. I run a factory s10 4.3L converter which has advertised stall of 2200, and will flash to 2800. They have the highest stall of a stock converter that fits, it's just a little looser than stock, and I like it.

Re: Converter Stall Speed - What Do You Run
With a 300 horse motor, you really don't need much converter at all. You could get away with a stock converter. If you think about it, Chevy built thousands of 300 horse 327s and 350s, and they all had a stock converter that stalled at about 1600 rpm.
If you want a little more stall, go with an 1800. Let me make a suggestion you. Make sure that when you order the converter, get the one with the lock-up feature. It's like having another gear. Personally, I don't like having any more converter than what the motor needs. If I knew your cam specs, I could tell you exactly what you need.

Re: Converter Stall Speed - What Do You Run
I agree completely with chevyrestoguy, you most likely have no need for a high stall convertor. A convertor has more to do with your cam and where you are making your power than how much power you are making. I am running a 2000 rpm stall convertor with lock-up behind a 440ish horse motor, but they key here is my cam makes its power in that range. 406sbc, 700R4, 4.11 gears

Re: Converter Stall Speed - What Do You Run
I have a 3500 stall on my truck with a 355 375 hp and 308 gears and I hate it. Stall is way too much in my opinion especially for daily driving.

Re: Converter Stall Speed - What Do You Run
2200-2500, would be way plenty on your app...(especially if you plan on driving on the street)! Little bro , runs a tight 10.... 3200 stall in his S-10 (track only). The old 383 , is around 390-400 hp, runs 3.89 gears & is not fully 'flashed", till the throttle is wide open ! Man does it kick then Its real loose on the street, not what you really want on a driver? longhorn

Re: Converter Stall Speed - What Do You Run
that can be the trick, not all TC's are built the same, even though there is little inside. a well built one should drive normal until you step on it.
best to avoid catalog off the shelf uni built units..... |

Re: Converter Stall Speed - What Do You Run
i think the concern here is the overdrive tranny and the 3.08 gears,
back years ago i had a 72 with a 300hp 350 crate 400turbo tranny and 3.08 rear end, it was originaly a 3 on the tree, and when i put the automatic in , i had no take off what so ever, i installed a BM holeshot around 2200 stall and did a curve on the dizzy , man what a difference it made

Do what I did and make the old lady learn to use 3 pedals. She hated it at first but now you cant pry the keys out of her hand. Her daily driver is a 5spd now that she has racked up nearly 100k miles on. No plans to give up the TDI or the stick shift.

a higher stall TC has to save gas too, I don't go around corners and open all 4 anymore, I just flash it to stall speed n hang on |
