K20 box mods
My steering box is being sent out for rebuilding sometime this week. A friend of mine's Dad lives near a place that will do the work for me, and he can drop it off plus pick it up a week later if not sooner.
I am going to have them rebuild both the pump, and box to match them up for more road feel. As a quick ratio I do not think would work well in a 4x4. Is there any mods I should have him do while at it? My K20 specs are pretty much stock with 285/75/16 AT's or 265/75/16's on PYO rims. I have KYB GR-2 shock on all 4 corners for reference. Beyond that its going to be a road trip truck to get to fishing spots with mild off-roading down dirt roads. |

I just got the box back yesterday, and all I had done was giving the box more road feel. Along a rebuilt pump to match.

What else besides changing the ratio can be done to a steering box? What do they do to give it "road feel"?

They can adjust the ratio inside the box. Different internals can make it feel like an old manual box or a corvette. Then they can somewhat adjust the point that it goes from minimal input movement, towards center, and the quick ratio aspect as the wheel is really cranked. They can also adjust the fluid orfice so that it takes more or less pressure to turn the wheel. A couple of things can be played with.

I have crossover steering linkage so I b pulled the quick ratio box from my 2wd parts donor truck. The box originally came from CPP.
I am using a late 70s - early 80s pump from a pickup with hydroboost because I've put hydrobooster on my pickup. However when on the 2wd pickup this same box was powered with a stock pump. Nothing special required.

A lot, if not all late '80s trucks had a variable ratio. It was slowish in the middle, where you drive and change lanes, and quicker at the outsides. Smooth driving, quick corners.

I cant remember the companies names but there are a few that rebuild the boxes. A little searching should tell you who rebuilds them and mods them. I put one in my Dodge and it was around $400 shipped. Chevy should be about the same. Some of the companies mod the pump to ensure full flow but the pumps are pretty much universal. Many manufacturers used Saginaw PS pumps. Nothing special about them. Basically the fittings, some metric, some standard, and some have o-rings.
