68 GMC K2500 Redo
I bought this truck in Amarillo TX off E-bay about 10 years ago and paid $2800. That was a little high, but it was exactly what I was looking for. Drove it for about 7 years before starting a redo. The last picture shows the condition right before it all came apart. Looks a lot better with the 2 inch lift. My avatar is a little tease of the final results.

Here are some pictures showing the condition of the frame. Notice in the last photo the original frame ID "KM 2500" is in white chalk. Not much paint on this frame from the factory.

Re: 68 GMC K2500 Redo
Your truck has been shown as an example of GMC long Fenderside 4wd,and probably for 505 Dark Green more times than I can count. It has helped turn many heads to turn and take a different look at the long Stepside/Fenderside. Not long ago you didn't see much love for them here, there's way more now. It will be nice to see this one done. I'm sure you'll do it right

You kept the V6, right? Or did you ruin it with a V8?

Very nice looking truck, I too have warmed up to the long stepper look lately. Have fun building it.

Re: 68 GMC K2500 Redo
This has been one of my favorite Longsteppers for many years now, and as much as I like the original green it looks like you have some pretty cool plans for paint.
Now about your frame! Must be nice working on a Texas truck! It looks like you could dismantle that whole thing with a good set of open end wrenches. If it were a Missouri truck it would be time to break out the torch, air gun, chisels and cheater bars!

Re: 68 GMC K2500 Redo
Blazerman it is not green any more, even though that was a great color. See the Dana 44 I bought from you. I bought the green paint and then decided to go with factory dark yellow. Here are some pics with the frame sand blasted and painted with Sherwin Williams Polane. The running gear has all been rebuilt with 3.57 and posi front/rear.

Re: 68 GMC K2500 Redo
The old Dana 44 cleaned up real nice! I like the idea of 3.57 gears and posi in both ends. Frame came out very nice as well. What kind of springs are you using? Tire size? I take it from your avatar that the truck is done and your teasing us with a few pics at a time??

Re: 68 GMC K2500 Redo
I have Skyjacker on the front and had Alcon custom make the rears. Those are Firestone M/T 16 inch. They stand about 33 inches tall. The 305 V6 is back in with a new NV4500 and a NP205. Yes the truck is finished. I will add a few pics every day, so this will be a quick build. Just like Chip Foose.

Re: 68 GMC K2500 Redo
Tried to use a Blazer fuel tank, but just did not like the way it fit. I built one myself with the fill tube in the correct position. I did use the Blazer sending unit though. Needed to replace the inner and outer rockers. The outers are pretty easy, but the inners take a lot of time. Went with an Old Air A/C, so I just redid the fire wall. Here is my cab removal solution.

I agree with Tim, a perfect mix of the old and new.

Awesome! Another longstepper getting some love. It was a beautiful truck to begin with. Can't wait to see it put back together.

Re: 68 GMC K2500 Redo
I took an auto body class at the local community college and decide to paint the truck myself. All I needed was a paint booth and there was one on CL for $1200. So, I bought it and installed it at my company. A new $300 paint gun and off I go. Hope you agree the results are pretty good for a first time. I painted some stuff and a friend of mine decided to help and paint the rest. We did not buff the paint out because it was rough from the factory and I wanted an original look. The paint is PPG DCC single stage.

Could you give us some details on how you hooked up the NV4500?

Re: 68 GMC K2500 Redo
A couple of people have asked about the NV4500/205 conversion. I designed and built both the engine to trans and trans to NP205. So, it was all custom work. Yes, I know it was a lot of time and effort. Just wanted to do it to learn more about machining. You can see my solution to the known 5th gear problem. I do not have a lot of miles on the unit, but no problems yet. Another paint pic with some stuff installed. More to come.
