Well after a few months of work, I finally got the 58 on the road. Quite impressed with the power the little 283 still has in her.

History... Well dad ORDERED this truck in early 1958 from Tom Carrell Chevrolet in San Fernando Ca. It arrived sometime in May of 58. He used it as a work truck until he retired in 72. At that point, it became our family wotkhorse. Landfill, helping people move...etc. In 1976, at the age of 12, dad tossed me the keys one day at the landfill and said, you know how to drive it, you've been watching me for years...So here I was at 12 driving the truck. In 1980, used the truck to get my drivers license.
In 95 dad passed away, and the truck was sold to a neighbor by my sister for $500. I bought it back in 2012, he didn't even plate it or title it.
He said it never felt right driving it because he knew that my dad always said that it was my truck.

I like this truck and it also feels to me like the rightful owner has it back. Looks like it's lowered a bit, how did you do it?

What plans do you have for it, if any?

I know you're not asking...but what the heck. If it were mine I'd color sand it and polish/wax the hell out of it and drive it as is. I like shiny is why I'd polish it but if color sanding went through to primer or bare metal in spots, so what? Maybe I'd rattle can spray the bare spots with gloss clear but otherwise I'd drive it as my a Dad left it.

Nice Truck Indynick! ? for you, did you change out the steering wheel at one time to the
55-56 and the steering column also? reason i ask is 58's are a shorter column with a more dished steering wheel!

i used to think these truck were a not so nice then I found My fathers 59 Viking after 37 yrs
and all those memories came flooding back...
Now i'm all about the "work force" style truck and m amazed all the parts are available

Beautiful truck! I am also interested in the story of the 54/55 steering wheel and how the truck ended up where it is from Calif! I also learned to drive with my Dads '57 3200 with straight six.... Bright red with 3 on the tree!!

Well its been almost 2 years from your original post on this , to your post today , so how is the truck (and your self) ?? , and can you go into more detail about the truck , like suspension changes you did to get the stance it has in the pictures , upgrades, mods , etc

On a side note , my dad worked at Tom Carrell Chevrolet in the 60's in the parts department , then went to Allen Gwynn Chevrolet in Glendale , where he got the engine trans combo in 1969 that is in my (his) truck now , .... anyway , i like the stance of the truck and the brief history you provided , the ride height is about where i would like mine to sit eventually , and would like to hear some follow up info from your original post till now on the work that was done to it

Great story that I hadn't seen before. Back in mid 70's I really wanted a black TF bigwindow really bad but that didn't work out and I ended up with a 57 Panel with a hot 327 in it insttead.
