New 66 4x4.

Hi All,

New member here. I had a 65 2WD LWB in high school and decided to pick up this 66 SWB 4x4 for a second/winter vehicle.

I know this body is a factory 4x4, but is there a way to tell if the frame is? I know it is older styly but in looking at others pics unsure if it is the original frame. There is no number on the chassis by the ps gearbox.

Some things that are planned is remove the body kit, slightly smaller tires (thinking 33x12.5x15...any ideas on wheels and tires?) remove the vinyl sticker and HD stickers, and also fix some small things like speedo, tranny leak, ps sector leak etc.

look for a number on top of frame under cab pass side near rear of cab .....could be on either side any where under cab on the top rail of the frame

How does it steer/drive with that much lift? Are those 6" blocks in back?

I'd guess its a frame swap to a pre-73 SWB or Blazer.

The rear has the shocks in front.
The newer style locking hubs.
The spring frame mounts in back don't look like 73+
I'd look at the frame mounts for the front sway bar. to see if they're bolted or riveted to the frame.

Just some observations:
The column is 73+
I'd guess the TC is an NP205?
Power steering box looks like there's a plate behind it.
The PS pump and alt mounts are 73+

That's a lot of mods on a good looking truck for it not to be a frame swap.
From underneath, it looks a lot like my 72 K10 which also has a lot of mods, but I think the frame and diffs are original on mine.

I would say that it was a 73+ frame looking at the frt crossmembers and the box and cab mounting

That is a stock 66 k10 frame. But the front axle, sway bar, transmission and transfer case are most likely from a 70s truck. Stock front axle would have drum brakes and no sway bar, would have been a manual trans with a t221 transfer case with shifter on the drivers side of the hump. Tgose blocks in the rear are stock. Also, check out the bronze bushings on the suspension. Often times people neglected to keep these greased over the years and then the bushings get worn through.

I have to agree with Argonaut. It is a 1966 frame with some upgrades added. I have pictures of this truck posted over in 60-66 4x4's gone wild thread.

Yeah that's what I was gathering as the distinguishing factor from other threads. I know the rearend has some Blazer gears so I am wondering what else on the blazer made it into this truck. BTW, love your Big Ugly thread!

The motor is a jasper motor so totally unrelated.

The ps sector has a crappy plate job (one on both sides of the frame) and I think this weird angle makes the steering have 6 inches or so of play in one spot. Its thing that needs to get fixed #1. I don't mind the ride, but I don't like the look of body lifts so its coming out even though it means smaller tires.

I see that we are getting into bold printing to emphasize a point.
the spring pin holder do look original but difficult to see whether riveted or bolted.
why would someone remove the original 4 x 4 eng mounting unless it is a conversion.
ait does have 73+ crossmember for sway bar, under rad and eng mounting it appears (which can fit) and trans crossmember. I was looking at the cab and box mounting but perhaps that is or was his way to raise the body, for what??). it must be a funny ride with those 6" rubber spacers for the body mounts
here are quite a few of thos 4 x 4's in your wild thread that have been coverted with later 4 x 4 frames that could be questionable

Welcome to the forum

If there is not a VIN on the frame between the steering box and engine mount, it could be a GMC frame. The GMC's didn't have the VIN stamped on them. Without better pics, I would say the frame is either a '63-'66 frame with some upgrades made, or a '67-'68 frame.

It's a vinyl sticker. I want to remove it actually. Its a flame with small bowties in it. Will try to grab a closeup later today.

Is there a k in the vin# looks to me like an org frame with later axles and a body lift. the earlier frames are a little different. the e-brake set-up looks just like my 61 but don't know how the later ones were 67 up.

Yes K1446 so I know its original 4x4 body.

ok so on the top of the frame it should be stamped with the vin# on the driver's side toward the rear of the eng. bay.

Little update here. Made some desired changes mainly removing the body kit, changing wheels and tires and fixing some small things like leaks and removed that awful sticker.
