Ball joint question - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I decided to go ahead and replace ball joints while I was installing disc brakes. When I put the spindle one the passenger side, I notice that it seated really deep. I just decided to move forward and with the drivers side and come back and torque everything later. When I torqued it (I followed the Moog instructions of 55 ft/lbs for the upper) it seated so deep that I had to use a washer in order to get the cotter pin to mesh with the castle nut. The other new upper seemed to seat correctly. I knew something wasn't right, so I decided to take it apart and look at it this evening. As soon as I unbolted it, the ball joint separated, so it was basically just sitting in there. I tested one of the old ones and it seated just fine. Thoughts? Wrong ball joint?

Sounds and looks like the new one isn't correct.

what year spindle?
what year ball joint?

The ball joints are Moog K6024 63 - 70 and the spindles are 63 - 70 McGaughy's.

I don't have a caliper to measure with (that's what I was unsuccessfully trying to use the crescent wrench for), but to me it looks like the taper on the new one is slightly different.

They do match....both are 63 - 70. I guess I have to assume that either this new ball joint was in the wrong package or there was something wrong with it.

I had a chance to look at all my new but old boxes of when I tore down my k-member and replaced all the parts.I used the same k6024 moog problem solver upper ball joints with those same Mcgauhys spindles and it all worked out.I believe you either have later model McGaughy's spindles which require the larger upper and lower drift ball joints, the 63-70's are a smaller drift/pin ball joint than the later ones used in 70-up...The upper ball joints you have pictured appear to be different in size...
