Question Motors Manual, distributor cap firing order Mystery

Hi. I have a 66 6 cyl inline 250 from a truck. My ? is whats going on with my firing order in my dist.cap. The book shows the following. With the "R" facing the firewall and the srcew near touching the block. To the right of the screw is #4 followed by #1 #5 #3 #6 #2 as seen in the book. This is not what I have and will not run, I tried this. This is what runs the car and I put 600 miles on it last summer. Going clockwise from the screw #1 #5 #3 #6 #2 #4 this works. Any ideas as to whats going on. Is the book wrong or has somthing been chaned to make this happen. Thanks for any help. Signed FRUSTRATED.

Re: Motors Manual, distributor cap firing order Mystery

i may be off, is the firing order still the same? if so i have built engines and a very good friend and engine builder has been able to making the next cylinder in-line be the first piston to get fired. what he did is make which ever one he wanted go to its TDC became the "number one" piston and then wire it up in the proper order, as long as its in the proper order i guess it doesnt matter which one you start with cuz the firing order really hadnt changed. i never done it so its only his word, sound like its what happen'd to you. i think!!!

Re: Motors Manual, distributor cap firing order Mystery

You could be all wires one post off, wouldn't matter if you rotated the distributor about 10 degrees. Hell, i've seen cars 180 out on the distributor and the wires moved to compensate. As long as they're in the right order you're fine, it really only affects where the vacuum can is, and if it doesn't hit anything when you're adjusting timing.

You're basically saying the book says 415362 and it runs as 153624, which is the same, and the same as 362415, or 624153, etc. Pretty much, as the distributor rotates, and it's going in that order, and running ok? Set the timing and be done unless you're picky.

If you're picky, on the v8's, the screws across the cap should be 90 degrees, or perpendicular from the front-back centerline of the block, and then cyl one is on a certain post. Again, would run fine if you moved plug number one wire and the rotor lined up to make up for it.

Number one on the cap is where ever it ended up when the distributor was installed last. Only thing you have to do is where ever the rotor is pointing when you put it in with number one at TDC that is where you start with the wires. You have 6 places it could end up. then once you know where 1 is then you install the rest in the correct order. 1 5 3 6 2 4

i always take the rocker cover off and crank by hand a few times that way i know exactly where no.1 TDC is. since i dont have a "bumper" around that way i can see where it is...

X2 with all of the above--the physical position of #1 is of absolutely no importance unless you have clearance issues with the vacuum advance.

What I do is pull the number one plug and put my finger over the hole. Bump the engine over till I get air out. Then the 0 line on the balancer can be lined up with the timing mark. On a 6 banger a screw driver is all you need to bump the starter. No need to pull the valve cover and disturb the gasket.

I only have the rocker cover off on my fresh builds on first startup, the starter bump and 0 degree is what I use if the dizzy needs to ever come out...
