9 inch conversion question??

I'm currently in the process of trying to swap the 12 bolt in my 67 c10 to a 9 inch and I'm trying to figure out what years and models of Ford vehicles had a 9 inch with the closest dimensions to our truck 12 bolts? I was told that the 9 inch from a late 70's Lincoln is close, but are there any others?

I'm putting my 2nd 9" in the truck now. This one is from a 72 torino. It's within an inch of the stock 12 bolt that was in the truck. The first one I put in had a way offset pinion (to the passenger side) and I didn't like how it had my 1 piece driveshaft angled. The first was pulled from a 77-78 bronco. It's about 3 inches wider.

I think Moser makes a direct bolt in now, although as you may suspect, easiest or strongest will never equal cheapest.

The first one is a truck housing.

What I started with and narrowed one side to center the pinion. Also had 3.25 tubes.

I've looked at the moser packages, and I'm trying to decide if it's more worth it to go ahead and just order a complete rear end rather than modify an old 9". Does anyone know what the general price difference would be between buying a new moser unit and building an equivalent strength used 9""? This truck will primarily be street driven with occasional track use, but I want the rear to be able to handle just about whatever I throw at it.

The cost of narrowing an original 9" housing depends on how much of the dirty work you do yourself. If you just drop off a complete greasy dirty differential with all the original brackets, for someone to narrow, it's going to cost 'ya. At least that is the way it is in my shop.

I have done a bunch of rears for folks and one of the things we saw was bent housings. A few bent from the demise of the donor but most bent from the welding that was done one it. A set of axle tube will move a bunch when you weld on them. So we always put the ends on the housing last after all other welding was finished. Had a 2" ground piece of bar stock that went in the housing to center the ends true with the center section. This made for very easy axle installs and a car that would roll straight and easy. This is the advantage of the Moser housing over a doner and doing a bunch of welding on it.

I ground the weld on the center. Pushed the longer tube in 2" to center the pinion up.
Low budget but...

My Moser fab 9" with 35 spline axles and Detroit locker.. cost was around 3400.00

I used my stock 12 bolt drum brakes. also had 35 spline axles, Detroit locker,Daytona aluminum pinion cover,tapered bearing upgrade, backbrace, 1350 yoke and 3.25 ratio. When bolted it in I ended up with a 3 degree up pinion angle which works out perfect with my 3 degree trans down angle. Very happy with the purchase..

I just acquired a 58 inch wide 9 inch rear. I believe it came out of a Torino and narrowed due to the thick wall flat top tubes and flange bolt pattern. It has 31 spline Moser 5x5 axles.
The question I have is due to the thick walled 3.25 inch housing will this be a big issue doing a swap into a trailing arm 68 with a stock 3 inch 12 bolt housing? Any info would be appreciated.

I don't think you should have any problems. With installing a 10.5" 14 bolt, most guys will grind a small notch in the axle tube for clearance for the U-bolts. The 14 bolt has 3.375 diameter axle tubes. You could use the 14 bolt trailing arm mounts that I make for that 9" housing.

While your working you might consider a disc. conversion like the inexpensive one I recently installed on the 9" ford in my Nova. Cheap kit included calipers, rotors, brackets, hoses, & hardware for less than $300 free shipping from Summit. Uses little 11' o.e.m. rotors & calipers from the front of some little GM product. They seemed to have a variety of kits and were pretty helpful. It all bolted together and works GOOD. I got the tech. info and part number from Right Stuff Detailing but bought it from Summit a little cheaper AND with free shipping.

Hey Rusty
I'm already there when it comes to brakes, I'm slowly buying parts and ended up buying a full chassis out of a 74. It had a 700hp BBC with tranny and rear end built to handle the power. So now in the process of crossing everything over to my truck. I had the CPP big brake kit before so just needed the bracket so I can mount the rear 12" discs out back on the 9 inch. Cant wait to get rid of all drum brakes on all 4 corners gone. Should be able to hit the corners with more speed now I'm going to end up with a pile of high performance parts of the 74 that wont transfer over but the price was right.

Don't worry about the grammar I wouldn't have held that against you lol!!

Hey Bad62,

I actually have a spooled 4.56 for sale as well. I'm buying a Trac-loc 3.50 3rd member that is rebuilt for $300 so I can at least drive it a 60mph with my TH400 below 2500 rpm. I've got to tune down my motor to make it more streetable so I can at least drive it not trailer it to some events
