Help- Transmission yanking & Crossmember issues 3spd manual to th350 swap
Help- I gotta bike to work in AZ heat until i get this swap done. I just spent 2 days enjoying the AC I just installed, but now- uh oh . stuck in teh middle of a tranny swap
2 different Qs here: swapping my old 3 speed manual to a 350 turbo auto (I have a small block 350, 68 long bed), trouble yanking old tranny, after i got it about an inch off. I assume I have to chop off the crossmember (since it's not on with removable bolts) so that the clutch can clear it also. ? (i orignally thought i could tip tranny over the crossmember and out - but maybe that's what's hitting now. With my tranny jack under there, it's hard to access/see everything . Q 1: ANy tips on yanking it out? Gotta remove crossmember right? Q2: Trying to find what crossmember I need for the 350turbo tranny Thanks! |

You should be able to get the trans out with the bellhousing in place as it is.then you will have to jack up a little on the oil pan or some support somewhere to remove that crossmember. The one you will need is the one for the auto trans truck it should not be that hard to find. Jim

The clutch will come out the bottom of the bellhousing. You have to cut all the rivets in the crossmember to get it out.

No, you can't even remove the clutch before the trans because the trans shaft goes all the way through the clutch disc. When you get it apart you will see how it works. Your problem is the splines on the trans are stuck to the clutch, which is a common situation. I have often had to use a pry bar between the trans and bellhousing to get them apart.

Re: Help- Transmission yanking & Crossmember issues 3spd manual to th350 swap
I took the tranny and the bellhousing out seperately, since the bellhousing is crammed in there pretty tight.
For the bellhousing I had a floor jack under the motor so I could jack it up a bit and get out those big rubber sidemounts between the bellhousing and the crossmember. I guess if you were able to just cut out the bellhousing crossmember you could skip a step but getting the bellhousing out first will give you room to get in there and cut the rivets out. |
