Custom steering column mounting
I am about to grab an ididit column floor shift column. I chose floor over column shift as I am trying to keep my firewall as clean as possible. That being said I would like to eliminate the stock mounting setup.
I saw this: but it looks like the column just slips through with no way of securing the column to the mount for support. I don't think it is a good idea to have the column in place with only the two bolts holding it together on the emergency brake bracket. So I am looking for ideas... what ya got? |

Re: Custom steering column mounting
Isn't that a grub screw in the picture? When you tighten the three mounting screws that one also clamps the sphere so it can't swivel.
I don't like billet stuff so I would make a plate that bolts to the firewall with a tight fitting hole for the column to slip through. Then on the inside I would fit a tab to the column with a hole in it against the firewall and weld it to the column. Drill a hole through the tab and the plate (or weld a stud to the plate) Then you can bolt the column to your plate for support and have looking clean in the engine bay.

Re: Custom steering column mounting
Factory column mounting has worked on 99% of these trucks for over 50 years just fine. Factory mounting also has a clamp, bracket and 3 large screws that hold the column in place. On top of being bolted to the steering box. I wouldn't reengineer what gm did unless its a replacement column that wont except the factory hardware.
But just my $.02 worth.

Just kidding. I have an Ididit column and used stock mounting. If anything actually applies enough force to move the column you will probably be glad it moved. If it is just the looks of the stock firewall portion of the mount you don't like then just run the ball type shown in conjunction with the interior bracket.

Re: Custom steering column mounting
I say 99% as there is always margin for error. The other mount will look better than stock, im just saying the factory set up is perfectly safe to use.

Re: Custom steering column mounting
I get that factory is safe. I don't like the fact that the hole in the firewall is 3 times bigger than it needs to be for my application. We are shaving as much as possible. Hell we wont even have a bulkhead fitting for the wires. I just didnt know how well the type I found will function since it doesn't seem to attach to the column in any way.

Re: Custom steering column mounting
It will provide a much cleaner look, id just put a plate on the firewall to reinforce it
