Trailing Arm Uh Oh

So I'm driving to work the other day and this happens.
Now , what is weird is that the truck will roll in neutral and stay put when put in gear (engine off) , but will not move period if I step on the gas. Reason I put it in drive in this condition is because its about halfway in my driveway and I figured that scraping up a broken arm wouldn't be a biggy. I need a few pointers as to what is going on because everything on the rear end still looks to be straight. The frame is going through more hell than anything.

With it in that condition hard to tell what is the issue.

I am guessing that when in drive that right wheel is the one getting most of the power which is trying to push the truck away from the reared. I wouldn't try too hard you might break more parts.

Whoa, can we get more pics? Am I looking at this correctly and did the u-bolts holding the rear end snap?

EDIT: I see now! Wow, it just plain broke. Probably from corrosion? Yeah, I wouldnt try to drive using engine power at all, you probably have a lot of binding of the suspension parts and u-joints right now, get that thing on some jack stands!

Don't attempt to move it. Replace the rusted/broken truck arm & inspect the other immediately.

Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.

Re: Trailing Arm Uh Oh

Looks like the trailing arm had rust in it and finally gave up.

Re: Trailing Arm Uh Oh

I had damn near the same failure, but I caught it prior to the final snap-POW!!!

Don't move it under it's own power, you risk breaking other parts...driveshaft, trans tailshaft, etc.

Re: Trailing Arm Uh Oh

Makes sense. I hope I didnt tear anything up. There was a huge cloud of smoke when it happened. Thinking its because the right side probably locked up. So when it comes to replacing these (never done it before) , I assume detach the rear end, get the arms hooked up and set it back on. Or is there a better way.

Un-bolt the shocks.
Un-bolt the bottom of the spring.
Un-hook the e-brake cables if still attached to the arms.
Un-bolt (more likely cut off) the u-bolts @ the rear end.
Remove the bolts @ the front end of the T/A.
Knock them loose.

Re: Trailing Arm Uh Oh

UMM there are more rusted parts under your truck most likely. You are one lucky man this did not end your life as well as others lives. Please fully inspect your frame and front control arms as well as anything made of metal on your truck. No really Please!
And YES it is time for some Porter Built!

Re: Trailing Arm Uh Oh

Seriously, you are blessed that this happened at home and not on the road. Sounds like you are in for a fun shopping list (trust me, it will be amazing when you complete it).
