Reconstructing a SPID
My truck was purchased without the original SPID. Apparently, the previous owner removed it to paint the glove box door - or it was too far gone to save. Is there any way to trace that information solely by the VIN?

Re: Reconstructing a SPID
I don't think there is anyway to figure out what the original options were unless you can find an original build sheet tucked behind or under the seat between the springs and the foam or under the carpet.
The VIN will only tell you basics like engine size, build plant, 1/2 - 3/4 ton ect, 4x4 ect. I don't think there is any online resource that can tell by vin, i think that started in the late 70's or early 80's Check for your build sheet. Mine was tucked behind my seat and was in great shape!!!

Re: Reconstructing a SPID
Thanks for the information! I only wish I had the original seat.. mine was sold to me with some really ugly buckets - so I had a used seat I found locally reupholstered.. Now I know for sure..

Re: Reconstructing a SPID
I found a copy of the build sheet inside the passenger side door, under the regulator mechanism. It was in pieces, like a jigsaw puzzle, and I have since lost it, but you might look there.

Re: Reconstructing a SPID
If your truck was built in Canada, or built in the US for Canadian usage then you may be able to get the information from Vintage Vehicle Services through GM of Canada (George Zapora).
Send them $60 and your VIN and they will send you the original RPO content for your specific vehicle (if they have it). Link: http://www.vintagevehicleservices.com/gen-tech.html The US counterpart, the GM Heritage Center Archives, does not have information prior to 1976. If they had it they would be able to provide the original invoice, which includes option content and pricing. Once you have that info, forum member Chipflyer can make you a new SPID label. K

Re: Reconstructing a SPID
It really isn't very hard to decode a truck yourself. If you go to the GM heritage site and download the vehicle information kit (in pdf form) for the proper year truck. You can go down the list of available options and simply look your truck over and ask yourself does this truck have (for example) A/C, auto trans, 400 v-8, positract, etc? That coupled with the SPID picture thread on this site will really make it pretty easy to option just about any truck that has a missing SPID.
You really only have to get close, there is no master list for your truck that anyone could ever check against and for example say "this truck didn't originally have a tilt steering column" unless as I understand, it was built in Canada. They never kept option records for individual American made trucks so the short answer to your original question about tracing the options by the VIN is probably no. Jeff

Re: Reconstructing a SPID
Good thought.
I probably should have included the generic info packet from the Heritage Center in my earlier response. 1968: https://www.gmheritagecenter.com/doc...olet-Truck.pdf K
