58 stock gauges LS swap

can I use my stock gauges with LS engine? If not please offer suggestions. I tried using the search on here with no luck.

Re: 58 stock gauges LS swap

you might look at the Dakota Digital VHX line, I believe they are a direct connect for the LS

you can use them if its got an electric temp gauge, but you won't be able to use the amp gauge without modification or unless you run the ALT wire into the cab to the gauge and them to the battery.

Speedo will get driven by a Trans-x box and the oil pressure ans coolant should come off the back of the drivers head with a brass adapter. There is a thread butried on the lsx forum about drilling and tapping a hole for the coolant port in the back.

Tom from classic gauges on here may be able to lengthen the coolant probe too. He also modifys the amp to volt.

Re: 58 stock gauges LS swap

58 has an electric temp gauge, i believe they all do except for 55
i converted my amp gauge to a volt gauge (as should everybody ) using a 2'' volt meter
it was relatively painless, read thru my thread for more info

i googled Trans-x box to read up on the tech, it is cable x
looks pretty slick

Re: 58 stock gauges LS swap

Too bad it's so expensive. I've been poking around looking for a stock parts or cheapie/DIY solution as I'm about to install a 4L60E. only thing I've found so far is a UK guy on the megasquirt forum who was using a old VCR motor with a PWM (think duty cycle) circuit. GM old standard was always 1000cableRPM = 60MPH. Start dividing by 2 and get down to 2MPH needs about 33RPM. Not sure yet what motor could be controlled stably that low and if it would have enough torque to run the speedo at that RPM. Cablex is like $350, no fun. Anybody got any bright ideas?

lynx5653, forget completely about running the stock AMP gauge. It's made to withstand 20-25 amps from a DC generator, not 70-80-100 or more from a modern alternator. This is a fire waiting to happen. See _Ogre's build thread for a way to convert to a voltmeter while retaining the look of the stock ammeter. That's what I'm going to do.
