Spring shackles
Trying to replace rear shackles on my '54. Ran into a problem getting the old bushing out of the spring hanger. One fellow suggested splitting with a hacksaw blade, but a hacksaw blade won't even touch that stuff. Anyone else with a method?

Re: Spring shackles
When I pressed the bushings out of my springs, I used a piece of all-thread and a socket.
They all came out good, except for 1. I ended up using my body saw to split it and lot's of cursing and beating with a chisel. My frame bushings all looked good, so I didn't even attempt them. Good look. |

Re: Spring shackles
They make a chisel especially for bushings, called a half round cape chisel. It's got a U shaped tip and you drive it through the bushing from one edge.
It cuts a groove in the bushing until it gets a good enough grip and then it just drives it out the other side.

Re: Spring shackles
Got it solved! Heated up the whole mount with a small propane torch, which of course, also made the bushing expand. Squirted some CO2 freeze coolant inside, then just pounded out with a socket and machinists hammer. Worked like a charm.
Thanks for the tips guys. |

Re: Spring shackles
Those bushings were the most work to remove in my trucks. Lots of sweat and cursing.
