New Hurst Shifter Problem - Won't Shift
Hey guys I'm new here, just bought a '66 C10 stepside with a 350 in it and a 4spd Saginaw 441 tranny. It came with some unstamped Hurst (i think) shifter mechanism in it that was having problems so I decided to buy a new Hurst Competition/Plus 4 speed shifter for it.
Today I put the new Hurst in and it doesn't budge in 1-2. It barely goes forward in 3 and I think it can go all the way into 4. There's no defined neutral either like the old shifter I just took out. This picture shows the arms in the old shifter, notice rod 3-4 and rod 1-2 were screwed in flush and the reverse rod was barely screwed in: The reason for removing this shifter was because after shifting into 2nd, it would get caught and not be able to shift to 3rd or 4th until I wiggled the stick in neutral between 1-2. Here is where I'm at now with the new Hurst shifter installed: Using the alignment pin to get a good neutral, I fit all the rods to that spot by screwing those nipple things to the appropriate spot on the rod. Notice the 3-4 rod (left) needed quite a lot of adjustment to sit in the new shifter. Also the 1-2 rod is on the other side of the 1-2 arm in regards to the previous shifter setup. My question is: Is the transmission stuck in 4th gear because I had to adjust that rod drastically? Do I need to take out the cotter pins that are connecting the rods to the transmission and move the plates around until I find a proper neutral on that end THEN adjust the nipples on the rods near the arms in the shifter mechanism? Any help would be greatly appreciated! |

Re: New Hurst Shifter Problem - Won't Shift
Start over with the adjustment. First remove the three rods from the shifter. Then make sure the shift levers are not on flipped front to back. Then make sure all the shift levers are in the neutral position. If on jack stands or a lift spin the drive shaft to verify the trans is in neutral. Then start with reverse and adjust the rods to fit the hole in the shifter. Should be good after that. Just from the pictures I think you have one of the shift levers flopped so it looks like it is in neutral but it is not. Last thing is to adjust the lever stops after all else is done.

Step 6 is what I was telling you to do and to spin the drive shaft just to make sure.

Re: New Hurst Shifter Problem - Won't Shift
My Dad always used to say..."Well, did you read the directions?" I'm just giving you a bad time. However, I thought about asking you that question last nite but didn't want to be a jackass. Now that you got it solved tho' I figure it's alright. For what it's worth, I also have that shifter and just downloaded your link because I didn't have a clue myself.

Was your new Hurst just the shifter, or did it come with new linkages?

Re: New Hurst Shifter Problem - Won't Shift
It was everything in the mechanism. No rods to the trans, no handle but everything in between.

Those directions are a joke, and a bad one at that....and welcome to the forum by the way.

Re: New Hurst Shifter Problem - Won't Shift
The levers I was talking about were on the side cover of the trans. So have you got it working?

Re: New Hurst Shifter Problem - Won't Shift
I took all the rods off including the levers on the side of the trans but I need an extra hand (foot in this case) to disengage the clutch. Couldn't figure out a way to keep the clutch pedal down even with a crowbar/cinderblock. So this weekend I will be working on it and I'll report back whether it's good or bad news.
