Brothers? CCP? Early Classic SWAY BAR?
My burb is C-notched and has cut original coils in the rear. She rides really bad, sways back and fourth and bounces all around. Im thinking of installing a sway bar. Never bought one, had one or installed one. Any thoughts on which one to pick and if it will work? Any thoughts on springs for the back or shocks?
I dont expect it to ride very well but it should ride better than it does now. Thanks guys!

Re: Brothers? CCP? Early Classic SWAY BAR?
Third Gen Camaro rear sway bar works well. They can usually be bought for cheap and install easy with a 1 1/8" spacer on each side of the frame. Rocktonka has good pictures on his 60's Burb build thread. If you dont already have a front bar grab one from a square body truck 73-87. These can be found in 1 1/8 and 1 1/4 depending on application. Txfirefighter did a great write up in FAQ on this swap. Front bar makes a HUGE difference on these rigs. I have no experience on aftermarket bars.

Re: Brothers? CCP? Early Classic SWAY BAR?
I installed CPP front and rear on my 72 burb. The rear bar made the largest difference. I am pleased with it. The drilling of the rear control arms is a little tricky or awkward. The brackets are supposed to have a bolt go into each half of the control arm and they will invariably be a tad twisted but it works. CPP should make a mounting pad for the brackets IMO. When installing the front sway bar (I have stock control arms) I had to do without the 1" spacer on the bolts. Those two minor complaints aside, the install is easy and the burb drives like a totally different truck. It's not an autocrosser, but it doesn't wallow anymore.

Thanks to both. I have a front sway bar, just wondering if the rear will be worth it and what to expect for install so this helps.
More comments/advice welcome...

Do you have the rear shock relocators and drop shocks?

How did they cut the rear coils? They are tapered on both ends and wouldn't bolt back in if they were cut. They should have brackets and bolts top and bottom..... Also, is the track bar still on it? LockDoc

No track bar, I had the shock mounts relocated but just running cheap kyb shocks and the stock coils were cut down quite a bit. When i hit a dip in the road my pumpkin slams the wood in the bed.

Re: Brothers? CCP? Early Classic SWAY BAR?
Oh ya - sorry, I meant stock set up...I haven't added anything yet. So just the stock track bar.
Here is a pic of my rear springs. This is my first Burb so nothing to compare to. How do they look? haha

Re: Brothers? CCP? Early Classic SWAY BAR?
Put some good quality drop springs in the back or air bags,
Then get an long adjustable track bar to re-center the rearend in the frame. Quality drop shocks will help also. I suggest products from Early Classic Enterprises.

Re: Brothers? CCP? Early Classic SWAY BAR?
Hey Aaron, I think adding one would be beneficial, I am adding one this winter as I am completely going through mine, it's torn down now. I have the right lowered springs for it as well as the correct shocks, adj. panhard bar. But you also should replace the bushings in the control arms as well to get all of the slop out. If you need any help just give me a call.

Re: Brothers? CCP? Early Classic SWAY BAR?
If you have a bad dip( side to side) when turning then definatly get a rear sway and longer panhard bar. Im installing a hotchkis rear swaybar myself. Youll save your tires too

With the correct rear set up,... you don't need a rear sway bar. Gotta stand up the rear shocks so they work and have a quality shock and a spring that works. Just my opinion.

Re: Brothers? CCP? Early Classic SWAY BAR?
I added the rear sway bar from CCP that I purchased from a local vendor after I dropped my burb and it made a huge difference, I also added their shock relocaters and 2" lowering blocks from Boris.
The install was easy and it helps control the rear for my style of driving. Btw, if you plan on pulling those springs maybe you should consider bags, even if you don't have a complete air system a the moment. I hope this helps. |

Re: Brothers? CCP? Early Classic SWAY BAR?
Aarons72,
I thought I did answer the sway bar question. I think it's really worth it, especially a top heavy suburban. The rear sway bar made a huge difference in my burbs ride. For what it's worth, I also have ECE lowering coils, shock relocators, and a longer track bar. Nevertheless, I see the CPP rear bar as a $250 (with shipping) no-brainer. |
