Re: GMC cluster indicator color filters

I just had to do this myself and what I used was color see-through plastic.
For the red I used Pam cooking oil cap
For green I found a kids pencil box.
It worked out well

Re: GMC cluster indicator color filters

I've been looking as well. They sell small plastic lenses on ebay for the 55-57 chevy's that you can probably adapt to our GMC trucks, that's what I was looking at. It would be nice to have the lettering on them though. Is the high beam lens blue or green? I thought mine was green.

There is a guy here on the site that rebuilds gauge cluster assemblies that could probably help...forgot his handle but you could do a search...I saw him listed under the vendors section as well.

I made mine from a clear screw container and colored them with Sharpie marker. They turned out pretty good.. Not sure if you can see them in this picture..

There is a post on here somewhere saying the member used colored plastic sheeting for model kits is what he used. Get it at hobby stores. It's been awhile since I've seen the post, so can't remember the exact details

Re: GMC cluster indicator color filters

I have read about using "lighting gel" for these. I have not tried yet myself, but have that suggestion filed away for when I get to that point.

Re: GMC cluster indicator color filters

Unfortunately, the thing that will be missing with most alternatives is the curvature of the lens and the writing. Has anyone seen a solution that takes both of those into account?

Re: GMC cluster indicator color filters

The original lenses in my 66 dash were flat. I ended up making the top 2 green for turn signals, the bottom 2 are red (have not hooked them up for anything but thought about blue for the hi beam and red for a warning light. I used small sheets of plastic and cut the circle out. Kieth

here is how my 66 dash turned out.......still has the red lenses on the bottom.

Re: GMC cluster indicator color filters

That is interesting that your original lenses were flat. My originals are still in my 66 and they are all curved.

Re: GMC cluster indicator color filters

For the red at least, you could use the red tail light tape that is used for broken tail lights. Get some at autozone. It's fairly thick.

Plastic binder dividers for me too....semi transparent ones from office depot....you can get a muti pack with different colors. Reverse printed (over clear adhesive film) the text and stuck them onto the divider material. Still looks good.

the printing isn't something i had thought of.
i had thought about using a translucent plastic and a colored LED. the lens would be white, until the LED illuminated. i wonder if i can print on one the way you did and it show through the translucent plastic.

Re: GMC cluster indicator color filters

I think they become curved as they deteriorate. Mine were flat on the '64 and mostly missing on the '66 parts truck. What was left of one lens on the parts truck was curvy and very brittle. I had thought of using a Brother label maker along with clear/black labeling tape for the lenses. This particular label maker will print mirror images so the label can be placed on the inside of the lens.

Interesting... A translucent lens with the image on the inside and a colored led to makes the lens glow what ever color you want.

Re: GMC cluster indicator color filters

Colored LED is the way I would do it next time...with reverse printed text....or straight printed if you could get it thru the printer!

Pic of mine attached...cant see the text with the camera but it is there...no light in it yet though.....need to find a way to light it up if the elec fuel pump fails .

I posted a "how to" on restoring gauge clusters, it has info on making lenses.
