stock steering gearbox

Anyone know if rebuilding a stock steering box is worth doing? Or has anyone tried doing it?

Re: stock steering gearbox

I rebuilt my original manual steering box in the earl 1990's, and still have the "manual" that came with it. It's a copy of the factory steering gear rebuild manual. I believe all you do is replace the bearings, seals, etc. I switched to 72 power steering in 99. I'd rebuild the original if you want to stay original.

Re: stock steering gearbox

First off welcome to the forum.
If you go to the suspension forum and search under" Back to the Basics"
Tx Firefighter has done articals on rebuilding a P/S steering box and rebuilding the rag joint.
A manual box should be simialar to replace the seals and if your rag joint is worn it can have some play in it.
As always we like to see what your ride looks like.
