Distributor question

I'm sure this is a dumb question, but I couldn't tell from the description/photos in the repair manual. How can I tell if my distributor uses points or HEI? Looking to replace the cap & rotor, but I can't figure out which I need...

Thanks.

Re: Distributor question

If it's an '84, it's almost assuredly an HEI.

HEI:

Re: Distributor question

another easy way to tell is there is a separate coil which is fed from a wire in the center of the cap to a usually black thin can nearby
