6" Crystal/Clear Mk1 Golf style headlights - tell me more.

I am looking at removing the original lights from my 1966 Chevy C10 truck and replacing them with thes modern lights if that is do-able.

Not sure I have seen them fitted on trucks yet.

Martin was over tonight on his way to his bike club meeting.

Told him you wanted the old trim, which is knackerred....... Trust me, I took it off tonight. ( he never saw it)

Anyway, he said, based on the direction you seem to be headed that I should let you have it if you can use it.

Almost no clips, as there are three types used, and most are rusted to the body and will have to be ground off.

Let me know when you want to collect, as they need to move on.

I have a set of this style vw lights new in the box, mine are not from neolite but the same exact style, they have a running light (or turn signal if you are inclined) an H4 hi lo beam, and an H3 fog light all in one 7" light. I see clicking the link that now they only have a yellow fog section, if that matters to you. I got mine from a VW golf seller from south america years ago (paid about three times this price too)

I also have a rare set of 6024 sylvania HID conversions, they are marked DOT and designed with a D1R HID bulb low beam and H3 high beam.


its my crappy opinion only that those lights in the post above look way to modern for these old trucks, unless you did the whole thing up pro touring style. Its also been my personal experience that the diamond reflector crystal clear headlights, for lack of another word, suck with regards to light output. I have only ever used the square ones though. Maybe grab some nice Cibie 7" replaceable bulb H4 style lights and bolt them in, they even have a small running light in them which is a cool dim glow in the reflector.

If Scions and Civics had 7" round headlights...these would be perfect. Sorry, I can't help it. I just see Chinese trash when I see lights like that. What about some Hella H4 conversions that actually have some engineering behind the design and look a little closer to the style GM gave that lovely truck in the 60's?

Anything with a "DOT approved" label isn't going to have the best beam pattern. Basically a "blob" sealed beam style pattern, if they're even that good. DOT pattern is trash, don't waste your time on them.



You want to find euro code or "E-code" headlights. MUCH nicer low beam pattern and more evenly distributed light. No "blobs" with minimal peripheral lightling like DOT headlights have. The best commonly available 7" H4's are going to be Cibie's. I have them in my '64 VW and 200mm rectangle Cibie's in my '87 Conquest.

I've tried Silverstar sealed beams (overhyped and overpriced) and Delta Tech H4's (overpriced remarketed Chinese junk) and nothing comes close to the Cibie lights. Anybody that says that their ebay or LMC lights are "great" can only be comparing them to their old sealed beams. When you compare those to real, high quality lights like Cibie, Marchal, or (some) Hella's you'll find that they don't compare- they're not even close.

One nice thing about quality e-code headlight is that the lenses are fluted and don't look out of place on older cars.


7" Hella H4's are pretty good but the high beams are aimed too high compared to the low beams. So you have to run your low beams aimed too low so the highs are effective, or run your low beams normal and the high beams are ineffective. That can work ok on a low sports car but not on a truck. You can also get them with a small "city light" (low watt runnig light) if wanted.

Cibie's are the best currently available. They have an amazing beam pattern on low or high beams. They have always made one of the top 7" lights available. City lights are available. The discontinued 7" Cibie Z-Beam is still thought of as one of the best 7" lights ever made.

You might luck up and find discontinued Marchal Equilux H4's on ebay but they are rare and expensive. Marchal also made 7" Amplilux headlights that have a separate low and high reflector with their own bulbs. One of the top 7" headlights ever made.


Here are pics of the Cibie H4's in my Conquest. I'm using 80/100 watt Hella bulbs and a 12ga relay harness to get full voltage to the bulbs.


Low beams. Notice the very sharp cut-off that limits upward light. Even with higher wattage bulbs there is minimal glare for oncoming traffic.





High beams. I can see deer or other road hazards a few hundred yards ahead and have plenty of time to react and stop.

I am guessing you are referring to my DOT marked comment above?

If so, I was referring to having an HID 7" light with a reflector that was actually designed for HID and has a DOT stamp. Go ahead and put some HID retrofits in a halogen reflector and there will more more glare, but much less useful light output, and lots of extra attention from the constabulary. I personally have had a lot of different headlights, even Cibie Quartz Iodes in a bmw 2002tii years ago, and these sylvania HID 7" just blow them all away and have a precise cutoff for glare.

the Cibie e-codes will also have fantastic output. just dont put HID retrofits in them, the reflector is not designed for the bulb.

No, I meant regular aftermarket H4's like lmc sells. Yours are nice quality and made by a reputable company for HID's so they'll have a good beam pattern.

May not be to everyone's taste, and if I were to find a more "original" looking light that offers seriously bright light, I would consider it.

Still, it is my truck and my way in the end.

It has to be function first, but form is a close second.

I have modern H4 Hella e-codes on my International and they are extremely bright, but they are also 7" lenses.

You can look at my thread from a few months back and I have 55w HID's in a housing similar to what you have pictured. They advance from low to high using a solenoid to change the focal point. They are bright as hell, but the only thing is, I haven't driven my truck yet, so I don't know exactly how great they work at his time...
I bought the same for my dad's '48 for x-mas a few years back, and he loves them!
