divorced transfer case
What are the advantages or disadvantages to them.
I was talking to a Ford guy who said he wasn't a fan of them, and wish they mated like Chevy for his high boy. Something about drive line slop being the issue. |

Re: divorced transfer case
A little more maintenance with the extra drive shaft and the mounting bushings. That's about it. The advantage is it is a lot easier to change the clutch when needed and a longer front shaft when a lift kit is added

Re: divorced transfer case
A divorced case is good if you want a big lift like 16 inches or more,If he has drive line slop its wore out u joints or other problems basicly a lack of maintenance. All the napco gm trucks used a divorced case which was 50s in to the mid 60s.Ford ran both divorced and married in the 70s,The bronco and f150 was married the f250/f350 was half and half.

Re: divorced transfer case
Depends on the year. The divorced mount t case I'm most familiar with is the T-221. When I rebuilt mine 15+ years ago shafts were unubtanable. You could cross reference bearings and seals but if you needed hard parts good luck. Not sure how many others were divorced mount. One other positive would be that it would be easier to obtain acceptable drive shaft angles on lifted trucks.

Re: divorced transfer case
Had a T221 in the '63 originally. Swapped it out to a Dodge divorced 205. I like being able to run nearly any transmission I want to. Drive line slop has never been a problem.

Re: divorced transfer case
Yeah you can run any trans and using a 2wd one its cheaper then the same one 4x4.Replacement parts for the np205 are easy but for the t221 good luck on that.

Re: divorced transfer case
63GENIII---so how is your combo working? Might just do this to mine down the road as it's pretty much not a freeway filer with the stock stuff.

Re: divorced transfer case
To date, my setup has been real good to me. I still have to work out the drive line angle a little bettr and connect the speedometer cable. The T221 worked great as well but I did notice a significant reduction in gear noise with the 205. I still have the 221 as I was going to get a bearing kit for it. Haven't gotten around to that one yet and probably never will with all the projects I have going.

Re: divorced transfer case
The early fords used a Dana 24 transfer case. I like the divorced cases too. It let me easily put a Clark 5 speed in my '66 Ford.
My problem with them is that when you run a lot of power through them when pulling big loads, it eats mounts. To remedy the problem I made a strut rod like a few of the newer highboys had to keep the transfer case from working forward and backward. |

Re: divorced transfer case
I thought one of the advantages was running the same drive line front and rear. I recently picked up a 86' np205 round pattern case. The outputs on the transfercase are different configurations. Is it possible to change one of my outputs so it is the same as the other. This seems like it would be a good advantage to running a divorced case.

Re: divorced transfer case
I installed a divorce cas in my truck. I did it so I could clock the case and was sick of the trans leaking into the t-case. I did everything and couldn't get the leaking to stop. I don't have any slop or vibrations. Its perfect!

Re: divorced transfer case
How did you come up with the angle or amount of clocking needed for your 205? I'll be running 10" of lift. Mounting of the 205 is the only part of the truck I have no clue how to properly setup.
