1968 K20 white factory steel rims?

Hello all, just bought a 68 K20 out here in Oregon. Were the factory rims 16 or 16.5? I'd like to put a set of original white rims back on it but not exactly sure which ones came stock on it.
Thanks

Re: 1968 K20 white factory steel rims?

I believe the factory rims were 16.5 but you can also use a 16 inch. You will have a better range of tire choices when using a 16 inch rim and you can still use factory hub caps.

Also, late model 3/4 ford rims are a good choice if you want to run a wider than normal tire.

Where in Oregon did you buy your truck?

Stock base tires and wheels on a 68 K20 were 7-17.5/6pr on Black 17.5x5.25 wheels.

16, 16.5, 17, 17.5 and 19.5 tires were all optional in various widths.
Remember no hub caps either,

I flew out and bought a 77 short step 4X4 big block 454 in Saint Helens. Drove to friends house in Salem and found a 68 K20 4X4 402 big block (neither engine original), then drove to Molalla, OR and picked up a 24 ft deck over new custom trailer. Got the 68 K20 dialed in to pull the 9000 pound load , loaded the 77 on the trailer Making way home now, staying in Ophir now waiting for rain to let up

So you are going to wait until July 4th when the monsoon season is over?

Thanks, had no idea they were that size and black.

Think I'm gonna go with some simple 16 inch white steel rims and no hubcaps. Truck is mostly original paint, sea mist green/light green. I'd post pics but you can't do it easily off of a iPhone/pad.

Gonna get over to interstate 5 tomorrow and head south, rain or not...I'm just not a big fan of traveling the roads that go west to east over to 5 from the Gold Beach area...pulling a big load in the rain

Re: 1968 K20 white factory steel rims?

CA36? Is that the road that runs from just south of Fortuna and across to Reading? I'm 99.9% sure but it was 76/77 when I lived in Fortuna. Great road for sure...on a bike.

The most common wheel seen on these trucks were 16" split rims. I never saw one optioned with 16.5s, as those were a new offering in '68 designed for the new low profile wide track/wide oval design tires you'd see on a 2wd hiway machine. These days, when I want a stock look I go with the Ford Accurides that are 7". To me, they appear as the 16.5s, which were 6.5", yet you'd be able to run the taller narrower 16" tire. You get the look of the original 16.5 where and the original 16" tire all in one. You also get a world of quality tire choices. I have these wheels with 255/85-16s mounted on my '72 K2500, but don't have pictures on this computer, yet, and Photobucket is not showing me my pictures these days (and how the hell do you contact them for help?... frustrating)

I'm a Fortuna native. Hwy 36 is a wild ride even in good weather. Not as scary as it used to be now that there are fewer logging trucks on the road and they've straightened out a few curves. The family still wont drive that road with me.

Re: 1968 K20 white factory steel rims?

Speaking of CA SR36, besides being a great bike road, it's equally as good in a sports car. The California Mille (http://californiamille.com/) has also included it for part of their annual run. As a side note, one of my sons had a nasty bike accident on that road. Thankfully he survived and recuperated, and he now saves the fast rides for track days at Thunderhill.

Hey, that's cool! I lived on the little ranch on Hillside Dr to the right after it bends left to go up the hill. My best friend was a retired logger named Max and his wife's name was Iola. This was in the '70s. I did a lot of work on a feller's place up on the bluff off of 36 near the airport. You could watch the storms come in, look down at the Eel River and out across Ferndale. I loved that place, but slim on jobs. Yeah, it was the logging rig trailers cutting the curves you had to watch. Lots of memories. I could go on,but stealing five seven's thread as it is.

Sounds like a white knuckle day, at least some. That's a hella one day run. You're reminding me of some "grab-a-truck" mission stories. I think it's time to start a thread for us all to share such stories, long haul or short. Always an adventure.

Re: 1968 K20 white factory steel rims?

So are ya home now? Trucks or parts of trucks, if I want it there's no such thing as too far. I haven't been able to buy trucks in recent years. Had to switch to sellin'. I've made parts runs, though. Nothing old, but I did just last week run about 700 miles down to GA to buy a '95 Suburban and drive it back (with no tags ). They said it was legal in GA, not too sure about the other states

Got home last night, what a beast the 68 3/4 ton is. Pulled a 9 to 10K pound trailer 2690 miles and never missed a lick.
I'm definitely going to look for some 16 inch 8 lug white steel rims and possibly a 2inch all spring lift

Does your new kw020 still have the original closed knuckle front end, t221, and manual steering? Would like to see pics if you have any.

Yes, those will work. You can usually find them at a local pick-N-pull for about $15.00 each. They are stamped Accuride 16x7
