Tailgate Letters

What K5 tailgates came with painted tailgate letters? Was it only non-CST models? Post some pictures of original painted tailgate letters. Close ups of the letters would be nice too.

I'm adding some white letter decals to my tailgate to see if it will grow on me. I'll eventually get them painted on if I like them.

For some reason I'm drawn to the plain white letters and bumpers lately. Love it! Thanks for sharing.

Re: Tailgate Letters

I think any rig without the tailgate band had painted letters. I wonder if the rigs with the band had the letters painted underneath?

Re: Tailgate Letters

Are these all factory painted so far?

I also see the disk brakes decal on the last pic. Was this decal factory only on the 71-72 K5s?

I have a tailgate from a salvage yard that I'm filling all the trim holes etc, to make into a plain Jane painted one to match my Jimmy. I already pulled the trim band off and the letters were not painted underneath. So unless it was already painted over, which is possible, they were not painted.

Re: Tailgate Letters

Thought I would chime in here. I took off my band (looking for more rust) and mine were not painted different. Mine was resprayed in the late 80's and it may have just been painted over though.

My 72 original paint has the wood grain band, letters under it are not painted white.

Re: Tailgate Letters

I think everyone is in agreement that the letters were not painted from the factory when covered with the Custom/CST band. Original paint on my tailgate with original dirt from under the band! GMC was "reversed" as the letters were body color and the surrounding background was painted on most I have ever seen. Second pic is the tailgate of my '72 pickup, repainted but like original

Re: Tailgate Letters

My Blazer was original paint when I bought it. When I painted it I chose not to repaint the letters because the the swing away spare tire covers most of the letters.

This is the case on most that show up on google images as well. It seems like the background was painted white on all except the white ones, which were black like yours.

Re: Tailgate Letters

Hate to dredge up an old thread, but......are Pickup and Blazer tailgates interchangeable? My 71 Blazer has a smooth tailgate, I'd like the stamped Chevrolet one with the letters painted.

The tailgate is interchangeable, but you need to transfer the lip screwed into the top from your old tailgate.
